Do you have South African Roots or maybe an extended family line in South Africa?

Join the South African Roots Project. We do not just accept experienced members, but our membership is open to new members on WikiTree as well.

The requirements are simple. After you volunteered on WikiTree:
Sign the Honor Code
Become a WikiTree Genealogist
These two requirements will enable you to work on your own family line.
We recommend that you do the Pre-1700 Certification as well because this will enable you to contribute to all open profiles on WikiTree.

After you have done that, just add an answer (not a comment) and tell us a little about yourself and what you are researching.

Do not forget to add the tag south_african_roots to your followed tags.

Hi all,

I would like to join this project. I and two great uncles have done extensive research into our family tree, back to pre-settlers British roots. I am researching some of the women who married into the family and slowly filling in the profiles created on the tree so far.

I started my Wikitree in memory of my late father. He passed away on 31 August 2019 of severe dimentia, 2 weeks after my birthday and 3weeks after my wedding. We missed our flight to go to his funeral, so I couldn't say goodbuy to him.

Live has been hard on me ever since and i thought of finding some long lost cousins he so much wanted to see again. And i did find them! So far I had personal contact with two of his cousins and also other relatives. Talking to them gave me some insight on my dad being a child. I also learned a few amazing things I never knew such as that both of my patetnal great grandmothers remarried and also that my parents are 5th cousins,

Wikitree has become an addictive game to me, a large puzzle. I sometime loose track on where and with whom I'm  busy as you learn so much .of people you never knew with many twists and turns.

I really want to go even deeper into my bloodline as I have a few wellknown South African surnames in my bloidline.

Thank you

Hi, one side of my family originated in Scotland and the other side were part of the 1820 Settlers in Grahamstown.
I was born in South Africa and now living in the UK.

I am researching both sides.

Mainly Wathall and Botha on my mother's side and the Park Family on my father's side.

Hi

My background is Irish and English (Holohan/Nolan and Steele/Blackburn), but my wife was born in Parow, and her background families are Liebenberg/Theron and Batt/Wilson Jubb. She always thought that her father was born in Germany, but I have found his details from Porterville to confirm his details.

I wish that I could get such good quality information on the pre-1850 Holohan family as I get from my wife's South African family

My great great grandmother was Catharina Maria Elizabeth Human (1832-1922) daughter of Johannes Hendrik Human (1804-1858) and Dina Margaretha Beukes (1811-1897).  I have been working on my family tree for years, but only started on this side in 2020 during Covid lockdowns.  I'm a genealogy tragic and just want to get everything right.

Hi, I'm Megan.

Both my parents were born in Cape Town, my dad parental line is van der Hoeven with his maternal line as Quine. Based on sources from FamilySearch and Ancestry, I have confirmed family from Cape Town and Kimberley.

My mom was born a Norris, with Thompson and Maneveldt on her father's side (Cape Town, Pretoria for sure). On her mother's side is Clarke, Schilder, Groenemeyer and Van Schoor. I have found a number of sources on Family Search and Ancestry for her.

I'd like to join this project to get more info and to contribute.

Thanks

Megan

My desire to join the SOUTH AFRICAN ROOTS PROJECT is many fold:-

  1. My South African roots go back to the British "1820 Settlers".
  2. Prior to that, my ancestors comprise, amongst many other lines (of course):-
    1. WELSH ... back to 80BCE.
    2. BRITISH ... including connections to British Royalty (Queen Mary & King William of Orange and, also, Queen Anne).
    3. The Cape Colony Governor Lord Charles Somerset.

I hope you find my answer to be acceptable for inclusion in the Project.

Hello, I would like to join the South African Roots Project.
My South African forefathers roots go back for centuries and I would like to trace the people and links in more detail beyond the level of my paternal Steyn and Gerber great grandparents where at this stage the trail runs out of clues to anything except their names.
On the maternal side, my Swartz grandmother is a journey of discovery at this stage but the trail for my Herbst grandfather disappears almost immediately and even his first names are uncertain. Unfortunately, he abandoned the family unit when the children were very small and his identity is an enigma. Somewhere there must be a clue that is waiting to be uncovered smiley

Hi, I am researching my husband's maternal family i.e. Zeelie and Aylward.  I have completed quite a lot on this family. I saw this Zeelie tree on Wiki and as there were many gaps and facts that didn't correspond with mine as well as the sources I had, I decided to join and help.  Thus also hoping to find answers to fill my gaps :)
