Aaron Brooks and William Aaron Brooks [closed]

I have a little problem... I am ready to create a profile for Aaron Brooks, b. 1794 in Rutherford County, North Carolina and d. 15 SEP 1854 in Dawsonville, Lumpkin County, Georgia.  The problem is that there is a William Aaron Brooks Brooks-3125 with close to the same information.  There is no Bio and does not agree (by name) with the published Biography contained in Brooks Family History written and published by Robert W. Stephens in 1985 in Dallas Texas.  Do I ignore it and go on??  Can I change the Given Name in the profile that already seems to exist?  I am not trying to reinvent the wheel but according to the Published family history his information is full of mistakes.  I put this same question on Tree House but did not get a detailed answer and it appears that nobody else wants to touch it.  Just to make matters worse, several of the siblings were also uploaded and just hanging there without biographies.  It looks like he has done no work on these since 2013.

I don't see any replies to your question yet, so I'll take a stab at it. It looks like you CAN edit the profile for William Aaron Brooks (at least I can). Just click the Edit link at the top. When I edit someone else's profile, I usually make a note in the biography with my name and date followed by a colon and then information provided.

Feel free to change his name, however, please remember that just because it is published as Aaron Brooks in one book, does not mean that that one book is the only correct source out there, or even that it is correct at all. We cannot assume just because something is published, that it is correct.

Have you found any original records with the name of Aaron on them? A Will? Estate file? Deed?

I am feeling better about this.  Taking the Collaborative approach, I was finally able to make contact with the Profile Manager and proposed what I would like to do.  I intend to dig into this deeper.  I think your idea is a good one; find additional corroborating documentation.

One last comment... a few minutes ago I received an e-mail from David Anwyl.  He said "Go for it".  It is an honor.
Hi Rory,

Way to go, good luck!

PS I am from Fort Smith as well, but currently living in NC.

Thank You Ginger :-)
