Question

This happens wherever the notes are in the gedcom file, not just when they are in a source record.

That would make the issue even more serious! Is that the case for cross-referenced notes only or also for embedded notes?

Notes can be represented in a GEDCOM file by the following structure:

The first variant shown is referred to as "cross-reference to a note record", the second variant as "embedded" note.

Looks like adding them manual in the end, still is the best and quickest way eeh ? Thanks for trying this new gedcom system Jan, every improvement of it of course is very welcome :)

I suppose "best" is automatically true, because no other way seems to work at all.

As for "quickest", the process is so tedious that I probably will not add more than about 10% of the people in my tree. Most of my tree are not already present in wikitree.

Well I sure hope things can be improved, it would be nice if profiles added by Gedcoms would look nice, some at least look better then they did in the past with the old gedcom system, so I think there's hope ;)

I can’t say about direct ones. I started with a mix of both but the software I used to extract a subset of my tree converted all direct ones to xref.

I too have only xrefed NOTES in my gedcom. I guess you agree that whatever type the NOTES in a Gedcom are, they should all be included in the imported profiles, so the importing software should be enhanced.

Keep in mind, you can still add all you want manually. It's just the gedcompare that is having the issue, and we're working on it.

Abby - Adding manually is not trivial because GEDCOMpare discards the notes requiring me to have to switch back and forth between wikitree and my genealogy program to manually retrieve each note, one by one, for pasting into wikitree. This IS a lot of work when there are multiple notes. However, since I have more gedcom uploads planned I created a small program that converts gedcom cross-referenced notes into in-line notes, thus bypassing the GEDCOMpare bug. It works adequately for me to proceed with gedcom uploads. I posted about it at:

The "working on it" might be speeded up if Edward's awk program were used as a preprocessing step in the import of Gedcoms.

Individual use of awk is probably limited to users running a Linux distro.

Awk is available for Windows but installation may be challenging for some Windows users.
