Duplicate profile created when changing LNAB to Unknown

I adopted https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hodgman-2 so that I can change her LNAB to Unknown as it states (Nee?)

I then went into the edit LNAB section and changed it to Unknown. Instead of just changing the LNAB on her current profile, it created a duplicate profile for her that was disconnected from the rest of her family and it also deleted her gender.

There seems to be a glitch somewhere.

It never just changes the LNAB.  It creates a new profile and merges them.  In this case it hasn't got very far with the merging.  As you say, probably a glitch.
Similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago. It didn't automatically merge the two profiles, but required manual intervention to do so. Don't which way it's supposed to work; I merged the profiles and moved on.
But this profile (Unknown-423481) was created in 2010. This is not a new profile created through a rename.
I know this does not seem like a new profile but is was created when I tried to change the LNAB to Unknown.

If you look at the changes tab of https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:NetworkFeed&who=Unknown-423481 it shows that  I created it on 12 May 20018

As RJ explained  the following should happen - "It creates a new profile and merges them"

Except this never happened. I have come across this a few times and I just merged the profiles.

It is something that needs to be fixed as new members might not be aware of this glitch and they will not know how to fix it.

It might cause a number of disconnected profiles

Once there is confirmation that this is an issue, I usually send the information to info at wikitree to make sure that the tech team is aware.   I also added sysops as a tag.

This problem still exists. After changing the LNAB to the correct one, the old profile still existed and I had to merge them. - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pelletier-2111

I recreated the bug with Mary Hodgman but I can't get it to happen with newly created profiles.
