I am related to Jane Baker through my maternal line. My mother's Ancestry.com DNA result states she is 2% - 8% "Melanasian" (Ancestry.com's definition of Melanesia includes Australia). Unfortunately we cannot find much information on Jane Baker. Can you please contact me if you have any more information on her?

My mother recently had her mtDNA sequenced at FamilyTreeDNA and her haplotype is S1. This strongly suggests that Jane Baker was an indigenous Australian, at least in part.

That would be hard to determine but I think maybe not.

Tis a feeling I get from your info nothing more...marriage may be a clue there.

I am Queenslander so southern states not my best subject.

Mick,

If your relationship with Jane is direct along your maternal line then an MtDNA test would indicate you have Aboriginal DNA. MtDNA is inherited through the maternal line.

e.g. Jane Baker > her daughter > her grand daughter > her great grand daughter > her great great grandson (YOU).

If, however, any of her maternal ancestors were white then she would not have passed on Aboriginal MtDNA to you.
