I may have already committed a faux pas.

I edited some profiles that were managed by somebody else, mostly just added sources but do I contact the manager before changing anything? What is the correct procedure?

I really appreciate this answer because I went looking for this explanation and couldnt find it. Now I have it bookmarked for future references. I am just now running into my first colonial ancestors that have already been entered. Thank you.
You're quite welcome.  I've made myself a list of the most helpful WikiTree links (and add to it constantly).  Some people even put their lists on their own WikiTree profiles, so they can access them easily any time they want.
On your Navigation Home Page (Nav Home Page in the top menu "My WikiTree") you have a Scratch Pad wich you can edit and save. That is where I keep most of my WikiTree links and other stuff to remember.
Thanks again. Found it.

Adding sources is perfectly acceptable edit to make. I try to follow the style the PM is using to keep it consistent.  If they are using span tags or something I find challenging, placing the source as a comment for the PM to add is an option...

Before removing something, communication is advised.

Most people understand that the profiles they manage might be edited by someone else. As long as you're just adding sources, the likelihood of "committing a faux pas" is pretty low.

I agree with Patricia, in cases where you want to remove something, contacting the PM is highly advisable.

Up near the top of the profile is a link for COMMENTS. If you post a comment on a profile, the manager will be notified. This is the best way to make contact, as other interested members may also see your comment and respond.

It's a good idea to first read through any other comments posted earlier to see if the changes you want to make have previously been brought up.

If you do edit the profile, it's also a good idea to make a comment saying that you've done so.
