From Ronnie Adkins' book, "The Adkins Family of Wayne County, West Virginia, Also Cabell, Lincoln and Boone:," he recalls a story that appeared in the 1955 Adkins Family Reunion book.
As told by Golza Adkins in the Adkins Pamphlet of 1955 John [Adkins] was killed by group of horse theives sometime during the Civil War (ca 1863). He along with brother Goldsberry and son Andrew were attacked after dark with John being instantly killed and Goldsberry carrying a bullet in his neck the rest of his life. Andrew escaped by hiding in the bushes until the horse theives were gone.[4][1]

Research Notes
In Ronnie Adkins' book, he gives Goldsberry's wife as Cynthia Ann Stanley, a daughter of Mary. [1] but the marriage record shows her as Cynthia Lovejoy.
Ronnie goes on to note that Goldsberry died during the Civil War but since it ended in 1865 that is not entirely accurate. Goldsberry died of an injury sustained during the Civil War which took his life much later. He also provides a death date of November 2nd which could be a typing mistake as there are numerous typing/ spelling mistakes in his book.
His tombstone is etched "Golesburry" but most records show him as Goldsberry.
