John Avery was born in Oct 1833 in Leyden, Lewis, NY. He married Eliza Palmer (1838-1916) in 1855 and had 4 children: Jennett "Nettie" (1860-1910); Flora B. (1866-1929); Emma E. (1868-1915); Jennie M (1877-1879). He died in 1907 in Rockland, MA. His occupation was carpenter.
He served in the Civil War in the NY Volunteer Infantry, Co. D, 146th Regiment from 1862-1865. He was captured in 1864 and spent time in Andersonville Prison, GA.
