Biography

Susanna Woodson Bates was born in 1783. She was the daughter of Thomas Bates and Caroline Woodson. She passed away in 1806.^[1]

Susanna married Thomas Hobson Walton in 1803. He was the son of Robert Walton and Mary Hobson. They settled in Cartersville, Cumberland county Virginia, where he was for many years engaged in the mercantile business. She was his second wife.^[1]

One day in the early summer of 1806 she was sitting in her house peeling cucumbers. A terrific electrical storm arose and while holding the knife in her hand she was struck by lightning and instantly killed. She left only one child, Robert Alfred Walton.^[2]
