Biography

Justice Bowling b. 1790 North Carolina d. 9-26-1880 Perry County. Kentucky. m. Hannah Reed b. 1788 North Carolina d. 1872 Perry County- Justice Bowling was active in the county government of both Clay and Perry Counties. He served as sheriff during a three day election, March 13, 1816, and as a constable in the Grapevine district January 12, 1818, while a resident of Clay County. After Perry County was established in 1820 he served as a Justice of the Peace in that county¬. As an indication of changing boundry lines in early eastern Kentucky. an Act to Attach part of Clay County to Perry County was approved by the Kentucky Legislature on January 12, 1843:

Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. That the portion of Clay County within the following bounds. to.-wit- beginning at the mouth of the Canoe fork of the Middle fork of the Kentucky River. at the Breathitt County line; thence with the Breathitt line to the dividing ridge be tween the South and Middle Forks of the Kentucky River; thence with said ridge to the head of Hell-for-certain; thence down the ridge between Hell-for-- certain and Bull Creek, to the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. be. and the same is hereby, attached to. and shall constitute a part of, Perry County

Sec. 2. That an election precinct is hereby established in Perry County. and elections therein shall be held at the house of Robert Boling. on the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River, and proper officers shall be appointed by the Perry County Court, to conduct all elections held there. (Robert was s/of Justice).

The 1880 Perry County census shows Justice Bowling, his wife having died. living at his home with black servant Hessy, age 80. Justice and Hannah Reed Bowling's children-.
