Biography

Peter2 was born in Newark. N. J., in 1698 or 1699,and died 11 Jul 1768 in Morristown, Morris Co., New Jersey at the age of 69. He married Phebe Dodd ( of the English Dods, Dodds) about 1725. She was born in 1703, and died July 26, 1768, aged 65 years. They are both buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Morristown, New Jersey.

"Peter, early in life, became a resident of Morristown, N. J., where he acquired property, and where some, if not all, of his children were born. At the formation of the First Presbyterian church in Morristown, in 1741, he and his wife were among its first communicants, and continued to be steadfast supporters of the organization until their death. Some of the descendants of Peter filled honorable places in the early political history of the country, while others attained to positions of eminence in the professions."[1]

Today all known members of the overall Condit family who perpetuate the Condict spelling, somewhat less than 5%, are descendants of Peter Cundict, second grandson of the Ancestor. Most bearing the surname Condict, when they left Morris or Essex County, New Jersey, had dropped the second "c" from their name within a couple of generations.[2]

From History of the Presbyterian Church, Morristown (page 43): "Peter 2d d. Morristown. 1768; his sons were Joseph, Nathaniel, Ebenezer, Silas and Peter 3d." And on page 293: "Peter Condict; M. 1742; was b. in Newark 1698 or '99; he m. Phebe Dodd, who was b. in 1703; besides the children named p. 43, he had: Sarah, who m. a Hayward [see Shadrach Howard.], Rhoda, who m. Peter, s. Joseph Prudden, Phebe, who m. (1st) Silas Day; m. (2d) Henry Axtell.[3]

Death: 1768. Peter Condict, aet. 69, fever, July 11.[4]

Burial: First Presbyterian Churchyard, Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey, see Memorial ID 12179549 at https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/12179549/peter-condict

Cundict-14 and Condit-546 appear to represent the same person because: Wife and death date are the same. Cundict-14 is well sourced and should survive.

What happened to our agreement that the LNAB Cundit would be used for all of Peter's children?

Why did Alan Condit remove the primary photo from this profile? Why is an icon showing instead of a photograph?
Condict-4 and Cundit-16 appear to represent the same person because: This is a part of trying to bring some sanity to the Condict, Condit, Cundict, Cundit, and Cunditt lines. Peter, Jr. adopted the Condict name later in life but according to his father's will was born Cundit.

Cundit-17 and Cundit-16 appear to represent the same person because: It appears that Cundit-16 was created as a placeholder for the ultimate merge of Condict-58 and that Cundit-17 was also created for the same purpose. Cundit-17 should be merged into Cundit-16.

Helen, please stop creating new profiles for persons already in existence. Please work this out with your cousin Alan.

Duplicates are two or more profiles that represent the same person.

WikiTree's mission is to create a single family tree, with one profile for every person. Having two profiles for one person works against this aim.

This is so important that Point I of our Honor Code reads: "We collaborate. When we share ancestors we work together on the same ancestor profiles."
