Biography

Henry Harrison Eccleston, sometimes referred to as Harry, was born in 1841 in Missouri and moved with his family to Lane County, Oregon. At the age of 17 he was charged with manslaughter and sentenced to three years in the Oregon State Penitentiary in Portland. After a petition was presented, he was pardoned by Governor John Whiteaker on 4 Oct 1859 and released.^[1]

In the 1860s and early 1870s, he was a miner in Montana. He was also likely involved with the hauling of goods along the Bozeman trail in the years before and during Red Cloud's War. He appears at Fort C.F. Smith in July, 1867 with the well-known guides John Richard III and Rafael Gallegos, along with about 40 Crow Indians including Crazy Head and Iron Bull. ^[2][3] They reported on a large gathering of Souix warriors with plans to attack the fort and to harass any reinforcements or supply trains coming up from Fort Phil Kearny to the south. Harry was sent with a message to Fort Phil Kearny by Captain Burrowes of Fort C.F Smith.

Harry later settled in French Gulch and then White Pine Creek, south of Gregson (near Anaconda) where he ranched, hauled timber, and raised a family after marrying Lucy Adams in 1874. He passed away on October 1, 1919 in Anaconda, Montana.^[4]
