Biography

Formerly linked as a son of Amieria de Montgomery and Warin but due to the absence of credible documentation of such a relationship, the relationship is no longer linked.

Name

  • Fulcho fil Guarini. "In a deed of "Wills' Abbas de Lilleshall," among others related to the priory of Alberbury, now in the archives of All Souls College, Oxford, he is described as Nobilis Miles Fulcho fil Guarini." [1]

Birth

Born 1050 in Metz [citation needed]

Revised estimated birth year: 1078. Parents were married probably 1075.

Parents

Some sources show that Warin of Loraine and his wife Amieria de Montgomery had a son, Fulk FitzWarine,

Documentation for such a son is weak. Bridgeman notes that Amieria's property which passed to her first husband, was held in trust by her second husband, and then came to Hugh, as her son, would have passed to Hugh's descendants if there were any, or to Amieria's other children, if there were any, but instead passed into the family of her second husband. [2]

Morris, however, affirms such a son.[1]

1085 Death of Father

Warine died prior to the compilation of Domesday; the name of Fulk his son, the first Fulk Fitz-Warine, occurs twice therein. [1]

We know that the death of Warine in 1085 left his son Hugh as a minor. Presumably Fulk, too, would have been a minor, however, he is less frequently mentioned.

1098 Sheriff of Shrewsbury

Fulk served the office of sheriff of Shropshire under his kinsman Robert de Belesme, then earl of shrewsbury, from 1098 to 1102.[1]

If Fulk was born in 1078, he would be sheriff at the age of 20.

1121 Sheriff of Shrewsbury

Fulk appears also to have again held the office in 1121.[1]

Death of Wife

At the burial of his wife, "with the consent of his son Henry", Fulk gave Pimley, an estate near the town to the abbey of Shrewsbury."[1]

1121 Death

He died after his second time as sheriff in 1121.

Issue

The deed of "Wills' Abbas de Lilleshall" not only names Nobilis Miles Fulcho fil Guarini, and to him is attributed primarily the foundation of a religious establishment at Alberbury, but the pedigree also names his son, Warine.[1]

  1. Warin de Metz. Referred to by Morris as "Warine, son of Fulk."[1]

Previously Warin de Metz was shown as born 1078, but if Fulk was born 1078, then Warin would need to be born a generation later, say 1100.
