Biography

N.B. I am changing William's date of death from before 16 June 1768 to  15 June 1770, so that it will be in line with his FAG entry. William Frey was born in 1695 in Roxborough, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania the second or third of twelve children and the second or third of eight sons of Heinrich and Anna Levering Frey.
In 1722, when he was in his later twenties, he married Anna Merkle, daughter of Abraham and Anna Veronica Landvatter Merkle. She bore him two known children, a son and a daughter:
  1. Jacob Frey
  2. Elizabeth Frey

Marriage and Family

About 1721, perhaps on 1 July 1720,[1] [2] when he was in his mid-twenties, William married Anna Veronika Merkle (daughter of Abraham Merkle and Anna Veronica Landvatter) in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
Note: The Frey Journal gives William's marriage as about 1723. Daughter Veronica's birth is believed to be about 1723, so they probably married a year or two before that.

  2. Heinrich "Henry" Frey, born May 12, 1724 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died September 25, 1784 in Lititz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; married Anna Marie Burstler January 25, 1756 in Bethelehem, Northhampton County, Pennsylvania; born February 12, 1730 in Pennsylvania, died September 27, 1784 in Lititz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
  3. William Frey, born 1724 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died 1811; married Veronia Stittler circa 1745.
  4. Magdalena (Frey) Paus, born 22 April 1725 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died January 11, 1797 in Graceham, Frederick County, Maryland; married Christopher Paus October 16, 1745, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
  5. Jacob Frey, born January 1, 1726 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died April 16, 1770; married Susannah Sophia Berthelot, December 17, 1749 in Pennsylvania; born November 17, 1724 in Almfeld, Germany, died 1785.
  6. Christina (Frey) Segner, born 1727 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died 1816 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania; married Johann Heinrich Segner February 27, 1748 in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.
  7. Salome (Frey) Hensel, born 1734 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died June 10, 1771; married Christopher Hensel.
  8. Elizabeth (Frey) Grubb, born June 24, 1737 in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; died October 2, 1823. In 1745 entered the Moravian school for girls in Nazareth, Pennsylvania; married Abraham Grubb.
  9. Catherine (Frey) Gesel; married John Gesel; died before 1756.
  10. Matthais "Christian" Frey, born in Falkner Swamp, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In 1745 entered the Moravian school for boys; died 1745.

Chronology

Mar 1725. A petition sent to County Court at Philadelphia requesting a road from the farmer's mill, later Pennypacker's mill to George Waner's mill on Swamp Creek, now the Skippack Pike. William Frey was among the 22 signers.
22 May 1729 Wm Frey of Perkiomen bought 200 acres of land from James & Martha Steel of Philadelphia. At the time of the deed William was in actual possession. It was in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania."William Frey, of Parkeawming, yeoman" bought of James Steel two hundred acres part of the latter's purchase of December 17, 1728, located in the western portion of the township. Bertolet's Mennonite meeting-house stands upon this tract. He was the son of Henry Frey and Anna Catharine Levering,.[4]
Mar 1730 Inhabitants of upper Philadelphia Co now Montgomery County petitioned for the creation of a new township to be named Frederick Township. William Frey and Andrew Frey were on the list of petitioners.
9 May 1735 The Proprietors in Philadelphia received of William Frey, quitrent for 200 acres in Frederick Township for 16 years - this paid his debt in full.
A Moravian Congregation was formed in Frederick Twp in 1747 with 23 individuals including William and his family.
Death is listed as 1768 in the Frey Journal. Will was dated 30 Apr 1756 and proved 5 Sept 1768. He named as executors friend Peter Herbind of Oley, Berks Co, and his son Jacob. Eldest son Henry to have 10 £. All personal property to be sold and the proceeds divided equally among all his children.
25 Apr 1768 William Frey sold his house & land to son Jacob - 157 acres for 326 £. It was part of the 200 acre tract purchased from James Steel.

Death

William died on 16 June 1768 in Frederick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania,[5][6][7] [8]of unknown causes. He was buried 17 Jun 1768 in the Bertolet Mennonite Burial Ground in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
