Research

Caution should be taken when researching the William Gilliams of early Georgia as there were several:

  • William Gilliam of Albemarle County, VA who married Elizabeth Ellis. William left an estate in Wilkes County, GA in 1798.
  • William Gilliam who married Fanny Walton on 28 May 1807 in Lincoln County, GA. This William died in the Alabama Territory in 1826, in that part that became the Mississippi Territory per estate papers administered by his widow and Robert Walton in Madison County, AL
  • William Gilliam who married Ephiah Ford on 8 Dec 1807 in Hancock County, GA. Little is known about this William.
  • William Gilliam who married Mason Tarver, the widow of Robert Tarver, on 9 Aug 1809 in Wilkes County, GA. William Gilliam may have died before 1819 when Richard Tarver makes his will remembering sister Gilliam and makes provision for the education of John Gilliam.
  • William Gilliam, son of Burrell Gilliam of Northampton County, NC. Per administration papers of Adams and Burrell Gilliam, 1815, Northampton County granted Power of Attorney to son-in-law, Elias Hodges. Power of Attorney stated that both William Gilliam and Elias Hodges are of Jefferson County, GA.
  • William Gilliam who married Miss Harris the daughter of Edward Harris who left an estate about 1826 in Greene County, GA mentioning son Gilliam Harris. William Gilliam and Miss Harris married before 1818. This William is the father of William Harris Gilliam who married Lucinda Fambrough per deed: Harris Heirs to William H Gilliam dated 22 Oct 1847 in Greene County. Amy, Sarah & Polly Harris gave land in Greene and Oglethorpe Counties, GA to William Harris Gilliam. They had inherited this land from their father, Edward Harris. Living on an adjacent tract was their brother, Gilliam Harris.
  • William Gilliam, son of Devereaux Gilliam and Edith Ellis, married Jean Smith about 1791. She was the daughter of William Smith who left a will dated 1815 in Patrick County, VA mentioning daughter Jean Gilliam and grandchildren Nancy E Gilliam and Susanna Gilliam. This William died before December 1826 in Alabama per probate records in Oglethorpe County, GA which state William was "late of Alabama." His administrator was son-in-law Mark Smith. (This William Gilliam is the nephew of the William Gilliam of Albemarle County, VA above.)

Both of the Williams that died in Alabama both died about 1826, making it difficult not to co-mingled their lines. Fortunately, both left estates one in Madison County, AL and, the other, in Oglethorpe County, GA.

In the 1827 Land Lottery, "the orphans [plural] of William Gillum, decd" received one draw of land: Section 3, District 5, Lot 44. Since two William Gilliams died about 1826 it is difficult to determine who was awarded the Lottery Land.

As to the question about which William Gilliam Elizabeth Ellis married, the evidence strongly suggests that she married the William Gilliam who died in 1798 with no children. His will is available at ancestry.com. It is witnessed by Charles Ellis. Elizabeth Ellis had a brother named Charles Ellis who left Amherst County. He traveled to Georgia, then headed west, eventually settling in Perry County, Missouri. William Gilliam's will appoints his brother Devereux Gilliam and sister Sally Williamson as his executors. Devereux Gilliam married Edith Ellis, Elizabeth Ellis' older sister. This reinforces the family link between the Ellis family and this particular William Gilliam. The Ellis family connections are documented in Thomas Harding Ellis' 1849 Memorandum of the Ellis Family. It is likely that Elizabeth Ellis Gilliam had died by 1796 because she is the only adult child not mentioned in her mother Susannah Harding Ellis Beckley's will which was written in 1796. I have a copy of the will, but unfortunately I'm new at this and do not know how to post it yet.

Gilliam-1813 and Gilliam-158 do not represent the same person because: William Gilliam [Gilliam-158] died in 1791 (no source) with 3 alleged children - David, Martin, and Mary. William Gilliam, the son of William Gilliam and Mary Jarratt [Gilliam-1813], died in 1798, and named no children in his will. These are 2 different people.

Gilliam-1813 and Gilliam-158 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for a William Gilliam, Jr, both married Elizabeth Ellis

This William Gilliam was attached as a son of William Gilliam and Mary Jarratt/Jarrett. He is not their son. William Gilliam and Mary Jarratt did have a son named William Gilliam, but he died in 1798, Wilkes Co., GA. He left a will naming his brother Devereux Gilliam and sister Sally Williamson. He named no children in his will, nor were any mentioned in his estate returns. I have removed this William Gilliam [Gilliam-158] as a son of William Gilliam [Gilliam-184] and Mary Jarratt [Jarrett-295].

Gilliam-1813 and Gilliam-158 appear to represent the same person because: There are no valid sources on Gilliam-158, Gilliam-1813 is sourced. These should be merged and the source information from Gilliam-1813 should be kept.

Removed Gilliam-1813 as son of Gilliam-184 since Gilliam already has a son attached (Gilliam-158)

The will of William Gilliam (d. 1798, Wilkes Co., GA) [Gilliam-1813] names his brother, Devereux Gilliam, sister Sally Williamson, and leaves a bequest to the children of John Hood - so Gilliam-1813 definitely belongs with this family. The question, then, is who is William Gilliam [Gilliam-158] who allegedly died 1791, Wilkes Co., GA (no sources) with alleged children David, Martin, and Polly?

You will have to get with the profile manager of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gilliam-158 to work that out. or we can set up a merge and keep your information. Because none of his sources are valid.

Gilliam-1813 and Gilliam-158 do not represent the same person because: The William Gilliam who died in 1798 (Gilliam-1813) names no children in his will. The WikiTree profile for the William Gilliam who died in 1791 (Gilliam-158), shows 3 children. These appear to be 2 different people.

The William Gilliam who was the brother of Devereux Gilliam died in Wilkes Co., GA, in 1798. He doesn't name a wife nor children in his will, but does name his brother Devereux and sister, Sally Williamson. Perhaps this William Gilliam (with wife Elizabeth and 3 children) is the son of a different William Gilliam.
