Obituary - Hucker - a well-known personality of the Ballarat district, Mr William Hucker, died at his home "Myrtle Grove", Gregory Street, Ballarat, on the evening of 16th July, having attained the advanced age of ninety-one years. He was a typical type of old English gentleman and gifted with a brain rather above the average. His birthplace was Worle, at Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, on 29th January 1849 and when but three years of age, was brought by his parents to Australia in the S.S. Clifton landing at Geelong in 1852. He received his education at the Bellerine State School and at an early age worked with his Father who was a well known Contractor of State Roads and Railways. Later he turned his attention to farming pursuits and had properties at Narmbool and Elaine, from whence he transferred his interest to the Ascot district until his retirement to Ballarat in 1927. Whilst at Blowhard he was a regular attendant and a staunch supporter of the Presbyterian Church at Miners Rest of which he was Treasurer for over 26 years. Mr Hucker who was predeceased by his wife leaves a family of three daughters and five sons, fifty-four grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. The funeral cortege which journeyed from his home in Gregory Street on the 18th instant to the Coghills Creek Cemetery was a lengthy one and was joined en route by residents from all parts of the surrounding country, throughout which the name of "Hucker" was a household word. The massive casket was carried by five sons and a grandson, viz. - Messrs Peter, William, George, Fred and Leslie Hucker and A. Hucker whilst the chief mourners were Mr and Mrs W. Hucker, Mr P. Hucker, Mr and Mrs G. Hucker, Mr and Mrs F. Hucker and Mr and Mrs L. Hucker (sons and daughters in law), Mrs J.F. Lee and Mrs and Mr L. Mitchell (daughters and son in law); another daughter Mrs A.J. Nalder resides in West Australia, Mrs M. Buck (Niece), Messrs H.A. and R. Bradshaw (nephews), Iram Lee, Ernest George Stanley, Robert, Allan, Douglas, Ormond, Lloyd, Albert and Fred Hucker (grandsons), Miss Janet Hucker (granddaughter) and other family relatives. The services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev S.J. Higginbotham, who also officiated at the home where he referred in well chosen terms to the life and passing of a grand old gentleman. Amongst those assembled were representatives of the Ballarat Shire Council, Ballarat Agricultural and Pastoral Society, St Cuthbert's Church, Miners Rest Church and State School, Ararat Shire Council and many professional and commercial houses. Among the floral tributes received were wreathes from St Cuthbert's Junior Department, President and Councillors and officers of the Shire of Ararat and Blowhard State School. The arrangements were carried out by Messrs W Barnes & Son.
