Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Remember Litchfield, daughter of Lawrence Litchfield and Judith (Dennis) Litchfield, was probably born about 1644 in either Barnstable or Scituate, Plymouth Colony.[1][2] No birth, baptism or other record has been found that definitively establishes her date or place of birth. Her date of birth is estimated based on the assumption that she was younger than her brother Experience (b. probably sometime in 1641-2) [3]but older than her sister Dependence (b. February 1646/7).[4] The proposition that she was older than her sister Dependence is supported by the fact that her grandfather's will lists Remember's name before Dependence's.[5] The proposition that she was born in either Barnstable or Scituate is based on evidence establishing that her father was a resident of Barnstable in 1643 but probably was living in Scituate in 1647.[6]

Marriage

Remember married Henry Luce. Their marriage is established by a 1674 Plymouth Colony court record ordering Josias Litchfield to pay his sisters "Rebember Lewse" and Dependance Litchfield each one third the estate of his brother Experience Litchfield, when debts are paid.[7] Their date of marriage is uncertain. "The Litchfield Family" estimated that they were married about 1670.[2] However, Banks estimated that they were married about 1666,[1] based no doubt on his estimate that their eldest child was born in 1667. Since Remember's father was a resident of Scituate at that time and Henry Luce was a resident there at least until in 1666, it is reasonably probable that they were married there.[1]

Residency in Rehoboth(?) and Tisbury

In 1668, Henry Luce and Remember's brother Experience had a mutual interest in land in Rehoboth. According to Farmer and Savage, "Henry Luce was of Rehoboth in 1668." No reference of him has been found in the Rehoboth records, however. Henry and Remember were living in Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard, by 1673 and perhaps as early as 1671, and remained there at least until Henry's death in 1689. [2][1]

Remember and Henry had the following children, all probably born in Tisbury except the first three may have been born in Rehoboth.

Death

Remember's husband, Henry, died in Tisbury sometime before March 1689 when a record refers to Remember as a widow.[1][2] The date and place of death of Remember are unknown, although "The Litchfield Family" states that she was purportedly still alive in November 1708.[8]

Lynn - If this profile is for a different Remember Litchfield, turn it into one. As it is, it is entirely useless and should be merged out of existence.

This record was adopted as an orphan. There is not enough information on this profile to match her positively to any Litchfield family.

Litchfield-42 and Litchfield-1198 appear to represent the same person because: Since there is no information on Litchfield-1198 beyond a name and birth place, I suggest merging her into Litchfield-42, which has the same name and birth place.
