Biography

The Honourable Hugh Nelson was the 5th son of Thomas Nelson Jnr Governor of Virginia and Signer of the Declaration of Independence and his wife Lucy Grymes of Yorktown, Virginia. He served in the Virginia State Senate 1786-1791 and was a Judge of the General Court; As a Republican he was elected to the 12th and the 5 succeeding Congresses 4 Mar 1811 to 14 Jan 1823; appointed as US Minister to Spain by President James Monroe 15 Jan 1823 - 23 Nov 1824.

On 28 Apr 1799 in Albemarle County, Virginia, Hugh married Eliza (Kinloch) Nelson, the only child of Francis Kinloch and Mildred Walker, his first wife.
