Biography

Charles was born on March 12, 1830, in Washington County, Kentucky. He was the son of Robert Rhodes and Elizabeth Cissell.

Charles was baptized Charles Columbus Rhodes on April 11, 1830, by Rev. William Byrne at St. Charles Catholic Church. His sponsor was Sarah Ann Riggs.

Charles was known as "Lum" Rhodes by family and friends for much of his life.

Charles was married three times. His first marriage was to Mary Katherine "Kittie" Ward on November 25, 1854, in Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky.^[1] She died just three years later on October 30, 1857, in Ohio County, Kentucky. Twoo children were born to this marriage.

He then wed Sarah A. "Sallie" Magan on May 1, 1858 in Ohio County. The marriage registration for this marriage has been misindexed and comes up as "Hagan." The couple had eight children before her death on December 23, 1879.^[2]

His last marriage was to Leana Carter on January 2, 1882, in Ohio County, Kentucky. She survived Charles.

He died on August 3, 1906, in Deanfield, Ohio County, Kentucky, and was buried in the Oceanfield Cemetery in Ohio County.

1880 - United States Federal Census - In 1880, Charles C. Rhodes, 52, had been recently widowed. He was living in Ellis, Ohio County, Kentucky with his children. They included Nancy E. Rhodes, 21; Mathew W. Rhodes, 19, Cicero Rhodes, 17; Charles C. Rhodes, 15; Emilius E. Rhodes, 14; Minnie E. Rhodes, 9; Lonny Morton Rhodes, 6; and Archey Rhodes, 3. It was noted on the day of the census that Nancy was suffering from consumption.^[3]

January 2, 1882 - Marriage - Married to Leana Carter in Ohio County, Kentucky.

1900 - United States Federal Census - In the 1900 Census, Charles, 68, is farming and living with his wife, Leanah, 54, in Ellis, Ohio County, Kentucky. He lists his father's birthplace as Missouri and his mother's as Kentucky. He and his wife have been married for 17 years. His wife is listed as having no children.^[4]

August 3, 1906 - Death - Deanfield, Ohio County, Kentucky.
