Biography

William Lyle Rich was born on June 22, 1907 on the island of Isle Au Haut, Hancock (now Knox) County, Maine. He was the son of William Stillman and Emma Hooper (Crockett) Rich. He had two younger sisters named Margaret aka "Margie" Lillian (Rich) Small and Rosamond aka "Rose" Mildred (Rich) Teter aka Kurlovich.

William married first Marie Genevieve Haviland (b. in Boston, Massachusetts, August 11, 1908) on August 31, 1929 in Medford, Massachusetts; and second Iva ("Ivy") Ruth Hammond (b. in Donegal, Ireland, June 19, 1909). By his first wife, Marie Genevieve, William had two children, Marie Edwina Rich and William Edwin Rich, both born in Medford, Massachusetts, where William Lyle was a storekeeper. William and Marie Genevieve divorced, which was absolute on December 26, 1936. Their two children were raised by paternal grandparents in Isle au Haut, Maine.

By his second wife Iva (aka "Ivy") Ruth Hammond, William had three additional children, Walter Andrew Rich, John Allan Rich (died in the Vietnam War), and Charlotte Emma Rich. William owned and operated a service garage in Wilmington, Massachusetts where he and Ivy raised their three children. After their paternal grandparents (parents of William Lyle) of Isle au Haut passed away, Marie E. and William E., children from William's first marriage, moved from Isle au Haut to Wilmington and for a short time resided with their father William and stepmother Ivy.

Later in life, William and Ivy moved from Wilmington, Massachusetts to Mesa, Arizona, where in nearby Phoenix, he passed away on November 25, 1968. William is buried at the Wildwood Cemetery in Wilmington, Massachusetts where he lived most of his life with his 2nd wife.
