Biography

Note from Lee Pound, For many years some researchers have thought that this Abigail was the daughter of Daniel Bayless and Joanna Lake. A few years ago I definitvely found that Abigail Bayless must be the wife of James Frier of Loudoun Co., Virginia for a host of reasons. Kenneth Hines, a strong Hines researcher, summarizes the reasons below and gives my website as a further reference.

It is not completely certain that Abigail Seaton married John Hinds but the evidence below points that way. I believe it is quite certainly the case.

This is not Abigail Bayless d/o Daniel Bayless and Johanna Lake. Another researcher has found solid evidence that Daniel's daughter married James Frier:

James Frier's 1771 will binds his son Daniel to Daniel's uncle Robert Muir, and his son Robert to Robert's uncle George Kilgore. Deed records show that James Frier's wife was named Abigail. Other records show Robert Muir's wife was named Phoebe, and George Kilgore's wife was named Martina Baylis. The executor of Robert Muir's will was John Bayless, and John Bayless was a witness for the will of James Frier. John Bayless was son of Daniel Bayless and Johanna Lake, and had sisters Phoebe 1737, Martina 1741, and Abigail 1744. These ages all match estimates of the wives of Robert Muir, George Kilgore, and James Frier. Thus it is extremely likely that Daniel and Johanna's daughter Abigail was wife of James Frier, and not of John Henry Hinds.

John Henry Hinds had a brother-in-law Joseph Seaton, and probably named his last son for him. He also had a brother-in-law Francis Maybury/Mayberry, mentioned in the TN land grants. A Mayberry researcher has written to say that Francis married a Hinds. John Henry had three sisters that I know of: Charity married Richard Higgins, Hannah married Ephraim Leonard, and Mary for whom I haven't found a marriage. Francis must have married Mary Hinds, unless there is another sister I don't know about. Joseph Seaton must then be a brother of John Henry's wife. John Henry was married twice (maybe three times). He married Elizabeth Thomas in 1791, so the Seaton wife must have been the prior one, this Abigail.

There was a John Seaton who lived very close to John Henry Hinds in Roane Co. They were on Whites Creek.

Many trees have her birthdate as 1744-06-26, but that is Abigail Bayless d/o Daniel.
