John Matthew Thompson was born on 10 Sep 1830[1] in Lower MacDonald River, New South Wales, Australia as the first child of William Pearson Thompson and Elizabeth Ewings. He had ten siblings, namely: Frances Ann, William Earl, George, Thomas, Richard, Elizabeth, Jane, Matthew John, Ann, and Joseph Pearson. He died on 13 Sep 1900[2] in Stanthorpe, Queensland, Australia. When he was 21, he married Sarah Walters, daughter of Aaron Walters and Susannah Lellement, on 13 Oct 1851[3] in Wisemans Ferry, New South Wales, Australia (St Marys Magdaline).
John Matthew Thompson was baptized on 10 Oct 1830 in Sackville Reach, New South Wales, Australia (Church of England Sackville Reach). He arrived in Sugarloaf, Queensland, Australia about 1886 (Moved from the Inverell area with wife Sarah).

John Matthew [2), William Pearson and Richard Thompson all came to Eukey at the start of the century. John and William [Bill] selected ground in 1900 while Richard selected his block in 1902. The Thompson family came to Sugarloaf from the lnverell district around 1886.
John Matthew l 1] and Sarah [nee Walters] had a large family, seven of their ten children accompanied them to Sugarloaf, these being - Richard, Susannah, Rebecca, John Matthew [2), William Pearson, Aaron and Emily. Mining had lured them to the area .By the time they arrived the tin supplies were dwindling, so they worked at mining and stripped wattle bark.
Their elder son Richard who was born at the Macdonald River on ]anuary 25th 1858 had married Minnie Griffiths in lnverel March 1st 1881. They had 12 children, Richard, John, William, Joseph, Annie, George, Robert, Elizabeth, Thomas, Albert, Arthur and Alfred. At Eukey he selected block 33v, Parish of Broadwater, an area of 310 acres. This property is currently owned by Des Day [2005].
Richard will forever be linked with the history of the Eukey district as the contractor who built the original Paddock Swamp School.
Bill was also born at the Macdonald River on December 19th 1866. He married Elizabeth Meharg at Mountain Station on December 22nd 1896; they had 13 children; John, Samuel, Sarah, William, Violet, Elizabeth, Elsie, Matthew, Kathleen, Walter, Doris, Emma and Joyce. He selected blocks 82v, of 159 acres 1 and 135 of 160 acres on .
Mountain Station; here he started farming and planted an orchard.
John started life at the Macdonald River on September 14th 1864. He tried his hand at mining, wattle bark stripping for the tanneries and was also a teamster. He selected block 84v, of 160 acres at Mountain Station and began the arduous job of clearing the land. In those days there were no winches or stump jacks to assist the settlers and John cleared the land by hand. Times were tough and roads were few and far between, like other pioneers John did his share of trail blazing. He is credited with cutting the road from Mountain Station to Stanthorpe over Mt. Tully. The road today closely follows this route. John Matthew rnarried Emily Griffiths on August 20th 1888 at Sugarloaf. They reared nine children; Emma, Thomas, Sarah, John, j8 rnes, Fred, Ernest, Harold and Les. With the help of his family he developed a successful orchard and many of his sons followed in his footsteps in the Horticultural Industry. He retired to Sugarloaf Road Stanthorpe and died on January 5th 1942. His wife Emily died on July 16 1946. Bill sold his farm to his nephew Bill Knight in 1918 and lived at Spring Creek for some time before he died on March 1st 1940. Elizabeth died on January 4th 1960. Richard left the district after a period of ten years and lived and worked in several locations. He died in Stanthorpe on June 9th 1932; Minnie died on November 12th 1936.
Later Generations Thomas, eldest son of John Matthew and Emily, was born at Sugarloaf on September 27th 1892. He attended school at Paddock Swamp and was known to be a good athlete. As a young man he was involved in sporting activities in the district, playing tennis and acted as nomination steward for the Sports Club. He worked the farm at Mountain Station with his brother Jack, and later took over the property. He married Dora Look on june 25th 1925 and their children were - Thelma, Winifred, Dorothy, Betty, Mary, Ruth, John, Heather, Yvonne, Margaret and Geoffrey. Tommy grew fruit and vegetables and ran sheep and cattle. He served on the Eukey School Committee and was chairman for some years. He retired to Stanthorpe ir1 1970 and died September 3rd 1979. Dora died J t1ne 16th 1995. Geoffrey, Thomas and Dora's youngest child, married Heather Horton in 1970 and they continued to work the farm until it was sold to Doug Mitchell in 1979. They are currently farming at Wallumbilla [2005]. 3rd 1979. Dora died June 1995. William John, eldest son of Thomas and Dora, married Lila Weir in 1961, and they set up home at "Kentucky". John has farmed and carried out contract work in the area until the present day. He has given continuous service to the Eukey Fire Brigade since its inception [2005].
