Biography

Birth and Parents

Based on the age of her first born child, Rebecca,[1] and presumed marriage in 1641, Dorothy was most likely born by 1620 in England.

Several online genealogies show that Dorothy's last name at birth was Tweedy, however, there are no reliable sources backing up that assumption. It has been hypothesized that her mark, which, based on the transcriber's copy, looks like a "T" and could represent the first initial of her last name at birth. (see the attached snipett of her mark)

Marriage and children

Dorothy married George Blake (abt.1611-1698) by 1641, probably in Gloucester, Massachusetts.[2] and together they had the following children (all recorded in Gloucester, Massachusetts Bay Colony)[3]:

  1. Rebecca Blake b. February 1641 d. 8 May 1721 Boxford m. Robert Ames
  2. Deborah Blake b. 10 November 1644 d. before Jan 1697/8 m. John Pemberton
  3. Prudence Blake b. 15 April 1647 d. 9 March 1688 Andover m. Moses Tyler
  4. Elizabeth Blake b. 31 May 1650 d. Boxford, Essex, MA m. Matthew Perry
  5. Mary Blake b. 14 February 1652 bp. 25 March 1655 d. 23 August 1745, Topsfield m. Zacheus Curtis[4]
  6. Thomas Blake b 9 June 1658 d. 25 June 1658 Gloucester[5]
  7. Ruth Blake b 3 September 1659 d aft Jan 1697/8 possibly married Joseph Shaw.

Death and Burial

Dorotohy died 12 Feb 1702 in Boxford, Massachusetts.[6]

Hi Sharon: Is there a source for Dorothy's last name?
posted on Tweedy-404 (merged) by M Cole
Hi M.

I researched Dorothy on GENI.com. I found a number of profiles all with the same information. See: "https://www.geni.com/people/Dorothy-Blake/6000000121878370842#/tab/overview" for just one of them. Also My Heritage has her listed as Dorathie Tweedy, here is the info on that spelling:

Dorathie Tweedy Collection: FamilySearch Family Tree Birth: 1615 - Andover, Hampshire, England Death: Dec 12 1702 - Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America Spouses: George Blake, M Ham Children: Rebekah Eames (born Blake), Deborah Pemberton (born Blake), Dorothy Blake, Prudence Tyler (born Blake), Elizabeth Perry (born Blake), Mary Curtis (born Blake), Thomas Blake, and name of one more daughter.

The first profile above has this source citation: Ancestry.com U.S., New England Marriages Prior to 1700 Name: Online publication - Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2012.Original data - Torry, Clarence A. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2004.Original data: Torry, Clarence A. New England Marriages Pri; @R1@

Hope this helps. Sharon

Thanks for getting back to me

I think there's some confusion with this Doroth Tweedy Blake. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tweedy-2.

I've checked the Torrey's NE Marriages, both the index on Ancestry.com and NEHGS and zero matches for Dorothy Tweedy. The enry in Torrey for George Blake is Dorothy ______.

Unless there's an actual record documenting her name as Tweedy I think her name probably should be changed back to Unknown.

None of those sources cite any actual evidence that her name was Tweedy. This is a pre-1700 profile, and WikiTree requires actual documentary evidence of names, dates, and relationships for pre-1700 profiles. Her last name should be changed to Unknown.

Sharon, this is another request to please change Dorothy's last name at birth (LNAB) to "Unknown." Unfortunately, the sources you cite to help determine Dorothy's LNAB do not meet the criteria for reliable sources set forth on WT's Pre-1700s page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources) with the exception of the publication, New England Marriages Prior to 1700, and that source indicates that Dorothy's LNAB is unknown. Additionally, her birth year and place are unknown. Thanks! ~Scott
