Laura V. Wagner[1]
was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,[1][2]
to Frederick Wagner and Ellen Callahan.[2][3]
On her marriage license application she claimed that she was born on 1 June 1881.[1]
However, the 1900 census claims she was born in July 1878.[4]
Also, a Laura Wagner is living with Frederick and Ellen in the 1880 census,[3]
and no evidence of a second Laura has been found.
[5]
Since her sister Marcella was born on 17 May 1878,[6]
she was not born in July 1878.
Since she was reportedly 5 years old in 1880, she may have been born in July 1874 (between her sisters Ellen[7]
and Julia[8]).
In 1880, she is living at 4 Ogle Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her parents and others.
[3]
In 1900, she was living at 2019 Moyamensing Avenue, with her mother and sister.
She was a dressmaker, and had not been unemployed in 1899.
[4]
On 25 December 1904, she married Bertram Elmer MacColl, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Bertram was a stonecutter, living at 2213 Pemberton Street, Philadelphia.
Laura was a dressmaker, living at 2208 South Rosewood Street, Philadelphia.
[1]
They had four known children:
In 1910, Bertram and Laura were living at 206 Fern Street, ward 3, Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, which they were renting.
Bertram was a laborer, working odd jobs, and had been out of work 25 weeks in 1909.
They were living with their daughter Ellen.
(The census misreports Ellen as Alan MacColl, but this is clearly Ellen: he was 22 months old, which matches her age, her birth certificate claims she was not a twin, and Roselean's birth certificate claims she was Laura's second child.)
[9]
She died on 27 June 1912, at Philadelphia Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of pulmonary tuberculosis.
On 1 July, she was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in section V lot 7 range 9 grave 2.
[2][10][11]
Research Notes
A Laura Wagner was born 4 March 1878 to Frederick and Mary Wagner[12] and died on 23 February 1881.[13]
But she was recorded with her family (not with Frederick and Ellen) in the 1880 census.[14]
She is therefore clearly not the Laura living with Frederick and Ellen in 1880.
