”J. R. Bostwick was the regimental sutler from the beginning to the end. He kept a large variety of goods that soldiers require, such as gloves, blacking, polishing stuffs, thread, needles, pipes, tobacco and cigars. He was a very accommodating man, and charged good prices for his wares, but they were not exorbitant, considering the risks which he took. At Camp Relief he furnished the officers' mess and had money to lend for a fair rate of interest; he trusted the men for two dollars' worth of tickets per month, to be paid on the first pay-day, and would give a still larger credit if a man asked for it.” See archive[1]

Death

John R. Bostwick. John R. Bostwick, one of the oldest railroad men in the United States, died of heart failure at his home in New Milford on the 16th inst., aged 77 years and 9 months. The New Milford Gazette says that Mr Bostwick was one of the earliest employees on the old Housatonic road, working up from the place of brakeman to that of conductor, and was afterwards a conductor on the Hudson River railroad in New York state, and for a time the assistant-superintendent of that road. During a part of the war he was a sutler in the south. He next returned to New Milford where he was born and lived on his ancestral farm until his death. He kept a meat market in New Milford at one time and had a slaughter house on his farm. He was quite noted as a bee keeper. He leaves a widow but no children. Mr Bostwick's funeral was largely attended from his late residence on the 18th inst. and was conducted with Masonic ceremonies..[9]
