Sarah (Offen) Boorman was born in Sussex, England.

Sarah was born February 6, 1865 in Withyham, Sussex to Alfred Offen (abt.1844-1879) and Mary Ann (Frost) Deeprose (1845-1927).[1] She was their first child and her birth was registered in East Grinstead.[2] Sarah was baptised on March 19, 1865 in St. Michael's Church in Withyham, Sussex.[3]

In 1871 Sarah (6) was attending school. Her father, Alfred (27), was working as an agricultural labourer. They, along with her mother Mary Ann (26), were living in Catsfield, Sussex.[1] In the following years two more daughters were born to the family, but in 1879 when Sarah was only 14 years old, her father died.[4]

In 1880 Sarah's mother remarried a widower with five children, although only two of them still lived at home.[5] Likely around the time of this marriage Sarah left the home to work as a servant. At the time of the census in 1881 Sarah (16) was working for the Oliver family, a farming family in Bexhill, Sussex. She was listed in the census using her middle name Anne.[6] In that same year Sarah Ann's mother had a son with her second husband and a half-sister followed in 1887.

On December 24, 1887 Sarah married Alfred Boorman (1863-1937), a coach painter, in the parish church in Ninfield, Sussex. At the time of their marriage Sarah was living in Ninfield and Alfred was living in Frimley, Surrey. Their marriage was witnessed by her stepfather Jesse Deeprose and his brother James Boorman[7] Their marriage was registered in Hailsham.[8]

The couple lived in the Camberley area until moving to York Town in 1890 when Alfred started his own coach building business in Talbot's Yard on Maybury Road.[9]

Sarah Ann (26) and Alfred (27) lived in the village of York Town, Surrey at 1 Kents Villa on Frimley Road in 1891. Alfred was working as a coach painter.[10]

Sarah Ann and Alfred had their first child Ethel (Boorman) Rogers (1893-1966) December 26, 1893 in York Town.[11] Two more children followed: Doris (Boorman) Derry (abt.1895-abt.1960) in 1895[12] and Kenneth Boorman (1899-abt.1966) in 1899.[13] Doris and Kenneth were born in Woking so the family must have moved from Yorktown sometime in either 1894 or 1895. They likely moved in 1894 as this is when Alfred established his own business building carriages.[14]

In 1901 the family was living on Guildford road in Woking. Albert (37) was running his own carriage building business from their home. Sarah Ann (36) managed the home and children along with a domestic servant girl from Malta.[15]

The family was still living on Guildford Road in 1911. Alfred (47) still had his own business as a carriage and motor car body builder. Daughter Ethel (17) was working as a clerk for an estate agent. Sarah Ann (46) and Doris (15) did not list an occupation. Sarah Ann's mother Mary Ann Deeprose (66) was also living in the house.[16] However, their son Kenneth was away at boarding school in Send.[17]

In 1918 the family was still living at 27 Guildford Road.[18] They continued to live at this address through 1923.[19][20][21][22][23]

In 1921 Sarah Ann's son Kenneth moved back to the home to work in the family business.[24]

While living on Guildford Road the Boorman family attended Trinity Methodist Church, a Wesleyan Methodist church.[25]

In the spring of 1924 they had moved to 147 York Road in Woking.[26] Together they remained at this address through 1936.[27][28] Through 1926 their son Kenneth lived with Sarah Ann and Alfred.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38]

Sarah Ann was widowed when Alfred died on March 8, 1937.[39] Alfred left his estate to Sarah Ann and their son Kenneth.[40] She continued living in their family home, but had another woman, Emily Cheeseman living with her.[41][42] In 1939 Emily Cheeseman was no longer living with Sarah Ann, but a different woman, Lily Pearce, was.[43] However, perhaps because of the war, the 1939 register showed that Sarah Ann had left her home and moved to Uckfield Road, in her daughter Doris' home. They were living in the tiny village of Four Oaks in Cousley Woods in Sussex.[44]

Sarah Ann died at Four Oaks, Cousley Wood on December 16, 1940 at the age of 75.[45] She was buried in the Brookwood Cemetery in Brookwood, Woking with her husband Alfred.[46] Sarah Ann's estate was valued at £3486 13s. 9d. and was left to her three children.[47]

Obituary

The Late Mrs. A. Boorman For over 40 years an esteemed resident of Woking, Mrs. Sarah Ann Boorman died on Monday at Four Oaks, Tunbridge Wells, the home of a daughter, Mrs. Cyril Derry. She was 75 years of age, and was the widow of Mr. A. Boorman, who died four years ago, and who founded the motor engineering business in Woking that bears his name. Both Mr. and Mrs. Boorman were active members of the Woking Methodist Church. There are two daughters and one son, Kenneth Boorman, who carries on the business.[48]
