32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment

Private Robert J. Allen voluntarily enlisted on March 12, 1862, joining Company E of the 32nd Regiment, Alabama Infantry. His service to the Confederacy continued until his capture and subsequent imprisonment. Records indicate he was held at the infamous Rock Island Prison.

Tragically, while a prisoner of war, Private Allen was admitted to the prison's hospital on January 2, 1865, suffering from pneumonia. He succumbed to his illness just three days later, passing away on January 5, 1865.

The 32nd was decimated, primarily at Murfreesboro, and by 1863, the regiment had only 196 men. They consolidated with the 58th in November 1863. The combined 32nd/58th then lost 257 men at Chattanooga and in December 1863 had 325 men.
