Gilbert de Clare would have carried this shield with "a label azure" (a bar with three downward prongs in blue) in 1215 at Runnymede, because his father was still alive then. He would have been about 35 years old at the famous signing of Magna Carta, at Runnymede. He is named among the 25 powerful barons who were appointed to defend Magna Carta.
After Gilbert's father died (1217) he would have removed the three-pronged azure label which indicated he was the heir, and carried the same shield that his father had carried at Runnymede (which would be the three red chevrons without the blue label - see Richard de Clare).
