Transcription:
Pirkins our Cook he was called big head pirkins in our company and John Brown and Sergeant Ceaser it comes to me that he was made Lieutenant before the regiment returned home but I am not sure now whether those men of my company D are alive or not I cannot tell for I have not seen any of them since I left home now about this (Charles Wooden?) he is a person I don't know He was not in our company but it seems because I am a coloured man with no learning that you all are trying to baffle me out of my rights But God knows I have found valiantly and stood all tests to the end and was discharged honorable and now Sir that is all I have to say.
I remain Yours truly
George Wooden, Company D, 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry
