If any woman is drawing a pension as the widow of Charles Reed who served in Company D 54 Massachusetts Infantry, it is a fraud [researcher note: I don't think it was fraud; rather that the widow of Tennessee-born Charles Reed didn't know the details of her husband's service and the Bureau of Pensions went astray in identifying him] I am the Charles Reed who served in that company and regiment and never had any such wife or lived with any such woman.

While in the war I had no mark or scar except a slight one due to a burn, on the left hand, until I was injured in the war, as previously told.

I am half Indian, nearly, quite dark, 5 feet 6 inches in height. I was 5 foot 5 when I enlisted. I think I did not weigh over 125 pounds then. I weight about 165 pounds now. My hair is woolley. I have always been smooth faced. [sidenote in margins: moustache at times]

My occupation has been that of laborer, farmer, shoemaker.

I have understood your questions and my answers are correctly recorded.
