Samuel Proctor 3rd served with 6th Massachusetts Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Samuel served in the 6th Regiment (often referred to as the 7th) of the Continental Line and was taken captive by Rangers and Iroquois the day before the Cherry Valley Massacre. He was held in captivity among the Iroquois for an uncertain number of months and probably won his freedom at some point during the Sullivan Campaign. He had returned to his regiment by January of the following year.

Samuel Proctor (POW) was born in April 1749 in Falmouth, ME. He was the son of Samuel Proctor (2nd). Proctor served in the military from 1775 to 1776 as a private in local militias. He enlisted from Falmouth, ME under Captain Lane on 28 February 1777. Proctor lived in North Yarmouth, ME on 28 February 1777. He served in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment from 28 February 1777 to 10 November 1778. Samuel was taken prisoner while on scout on 10 November 1778 as part of the attack on Cherry Valley. He served in the 6th Massachusetts Regiment from 1 January 1780 to 31 December 1780. Samuel married Joanna Berryon 6 March 1784in Falmouth, ME. Proctor lived in Lewiston, ME. Proctor died when a tree fell on him while hauling timber from the woods on 26 November 1794 in Lewiston, ME. His pension file number is W26524.

In the 1790 census Samuel was in Portland, Cumberland, Maine.[1]

Proctor-2478 and Proctor-10 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are the same person. Same parents. It doesn’t make sense that they would have two sons named Samuel living concurrently. I can’t find any evidence of a second son named Samuel, born about 1750. Check it out, and please merge if you agree after doing more research. Thanks! I suppose it’s possible that Samuel F (Proctor-10) was born and died BEFORE the other Samuel was born. I couldn’t find anything on Samuel F. Thanks for looking in to this little dilemma.
