Biography

Sampson Mason was born on 10 Mar 1625 in Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, England, son of Robert Mason (1600 - 1644) and Hannah Elizabeth (Wheaton) Mason (~1602 - 1643).

He was a dragoon in Cromwell's army and said to have participated in the battle of Marston Moor in 1644, following which he emigrated to America. Thereafter he was a shoemaker.

The earliest notice of him in Dorchester is found in the settlement of the estate of Edward Bullock of Dorchester, who in his will dated "25-5-1649" mentioned a debt due "to Sampson Mason for wife's shoes."[1]

Sampson married Marie Butterworth (<1629 - ~1714) on 9 Mar 1649 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[Citation Needed] Their children were:

  1. Noah Mason (1651 - 1699)
  2. Sampson Mason (1654 - 1717)
  3. John Mason (>1656 - 1683)
  4. Samuel Mason (1657 - 1744)
  5. Rhoda (Mason) Phillips (1657 - ~1714)
  6. Sarah Mason (1658 - >1712)
  7. Mary (Mason) Wheaton (1660 - 1727)
  8. James Mason (1661 - ~1675)
  9. Joseph Mason (1663 - 1748)
  10. Bethiah (Mason) Wood (1665 - <1712)
  11. Deacon Isaac Mason (1667 - 1742)
  12. Pelatiah Mason (1669 - 1763)
  13. Benjamin Mason (~1670 - ~1740)
  14. Thankful Sampson (Mason) Bowen (1672 - 1745).

He wrote his Will 22 Oct 1672.[2] He mentions his wife Mary, children, Noah (eldest son), Samson, Samuel, James, and four daughters (not named), and his brother John Butterworth.[3]

Sampson died about 15 Sep 1676 in Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony aged 51.

His Inventory for Probate was completed on 17 Nov 1676 when widow Mary Mason attested to the completeness of the inventory.[2][3]

Is it okay if I clean up this profile a bit to shorten it and make it clearer? My suggestion is that I can add the source documents as images that are linked to the profile, rather than citing the entirety of the documents within the profile itself.

You may, Lauren. I shared this profile which was created by my cousin who has passed and I have not kept up with his work. Thank you.

I've changed his birth date from 1624 to 1625 to coincide with text in profile and with FAG.

Corrected marriage place and date. Could not have been married in Rehoboth as they lived in Dorchester until about 1657
