Biography

Sampson Mason was born on 10 Mar 1625 in Bolton Le Moors, Lancashire, England, son of Robert Mason (1600 - 1644) and Hannah Elizabeth (Wheaton) Mason (~1602 - 1643).

He was a dragoon in Cromwell's army and said to have participated in the battle of Marston Moor in 1644, following which he emigrated to America. Thereafter he was a shoemaker.

The earliest notice of him in Dorchester is found in the settlement of the estate of Edward Bullock of Dorchester, who in his will dated "25-5-1649" mentioned a debt due "to Sampson Mason for wife's shoes."^[1]

Sampson married Marie Butterworth (<1629 - ~1714) on 9 Mar 1649 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[Citation Needed] Their children were:
