Francis Barnard was born in 1617, son of Bartholomew Barnard. [citation needed]
Francis married Hannah Merrill August 15, 1644 and Francis Foot Dickinson August 21, 1677.[1]
He was the immigrant ancestor of this Barnard line in America, arriving in Dorchester in 1636 on the "Freelove". He arrived in Hartford in 1644, and was a first settler of both Hadley and Deerfield.
(Francis may have been married three times. First to Mary Watson - no children.)

[Deane Merrill, July 2006]
The first wife of Francis Barnard, the mother of Joseph Barnard 1641-1695, is believed to be Hannah Merrill b.abt.1628 in MA, who m.Francis Barnard in 1644 and d.in Deerfield 1675. Hannah's father is unknown.
Some sources list Francis' first wife as Hannah Marvin, d.of Matthew Marvin, b.in England in 1634. But she was too young to have married Francis Barnard in 1644.
Some sources list Hannah Merrill as the daughter of Matthew Marvin. This seems unlikely, although an adoption cannot be ruled out.
