I don't know what the Gustave Anjou fraud is, or where to find more information about it. The source where I found the information (dated 1932) certainly quotes the primary sources, eg Archives Pont-a-Mousson, Archives des Vosges, cotte 2, tome LXIV, 17, s2.

Click on the category link at the bottom of this profile for more info. The tricky part is that Anjou included legit and entirely made up records and sources. So one needs to check the original. You might ask in g2g about Archives Pont-a-Mousson, Archives des Vosges, cotte 2, tome LXIV, 17, s2

I've just been reading up on Gustave Anjou and the family trees he produced. The problems seems to be how to separate the truth from the fraud. There certainly seem to be a fair amount of real people and true facts amongst it all, but how to discover which is which?

Exactly!

The primary sources I have for Antoine de Chabannes and his wife Antoinette de Fleuri are contained in the book ‘Bascom and Allied Families’ by Mrs J. D. Bascom, published by the American Historical Society Inc, 1932. Copy kept in the DAR Library, Washington DC.

The first source is:

Archives Pont-a-Mousson, Archives des Vosges, cotte 2, tome LXIV, 17, s2

The second source is:

The register of the Church of Nouzon, 11 February, 1469

These sources can be read here: https://bakerbascomb.weebly.com/bascombs-and-de-chabannes.html

One problem with material created by fraudsters like Gustave Anjou is that their work got re-copied into secondary works by a number of well-meaning but trusting people. Once a profile has been connected with the Anjou frauds, as this has been, it becomes important to find primary sources -- parish and birth records, legal documents, etc, to establish the person's existence.
