According to some non-verifiable information (as you can't see anything but a blur) through Find A Grave, this Hosea Wheeler was 80 years old at the time of his death in 1829, which would make his birth year 1749. The listing on Find A Grave also has his date of birth listed as 20 Sept 1749. On that basis, one might presume that he could not have been a son of Anna (Pellet) Wheeler and Jeremiah Wheeler, as they were not married until 11 Mar 1752 (3 years later). [1]
History of the Town of Stonington, County of New London, Connecticut, from its first settlement in 1649 to 1900 has him listed as the son of the 2nd marriage of Jeremiah Wheeler, which was to Anna (Pellet) Wheeler, with no birth date [2].
The Genealogical and Encyclopedic History of the Wheeler Family in America also has him as son to Anna (Pellet) on PG 309 but as the son of Jeremiah & Susanna (Babcock) Wheeler listed as his mother, on PG 315.[3]
In researching Anna Pellet's first husband, Richard Wheeler, he died 10 April 1749. So, if the birth date of Hosea on 20 Sep 1749 is valid, in theory, Anna Pellet Wheeler could have been pregnant with Hosea at the time of Richard Wheeler's death, been born 5 months after his father's death, and because the last name is the same, he appears in the records as the son of Jeremiah Wheeler and through the 2nd marriage of Anna (Pellet) Wheeler to Jeremiah Wheeler, become presumed to be his son [4].
This concept appears to be more plausible in view of the birth date of Hosea's half-sister Susannah Babcock Wheeler, whose published birth date of 10 Feb 1750 would be in gestational conflict with the above cited 20 Sep 1749 birth date of Hosea, if in fact they did have the same mother. In summary, it is entirely plausible that Hosea Wheeler and Susannah Babcock Wheeler were not at all siblings, having both different mothers (Anna Pellett and Susannah Babcock, respectively) and different fathers (Richard Wheeler and Jeremiah Wheeler, respectively). In view of the fact that their fathers were first cousins once removed, Hosea Wheeler and Susannah Babcock Wheeler were second cousins once removed.
Hosea married Bridget (Grant) Wheeler 20 Feb 1772 in North Stonington.[5]
There were at least nine, perhaps 10 children of this union:
Hosea Wheeler died 13 July 1829, age 80, according to his gravestone [6] Mr. Hosea Wheeler's death was recorded at the North Stonington Church as died 14 July 1829, age 80.[7] Perhaps that was the date of his burial.[8]
