Biography

Geriah Barnes was born Circa 1784.

Her first marriage was to John Mullis. They had the following four children:

1. Sarah Mullis

4. James Mullis

Her second marriage was to William Goforth. They had the following six children:

1. Preston Goforth 1807-1868
2. Catherine (Goforth) Hatten 1810-1868

5. Richard Goforth 1821-1878
6. Rebecca (Goforth) Matney 1823-1910

In 1850 she was living with husband William Goforth in Indiana.

I have deleted her birth year as I have yet to find a concrete date for her birth. I am currently researching to see if a year can be found. Chrissy

It is possible we are talking about the same Mullis who was married to Geriah Barnes, but the only instance I've found her recorded as wife of a Mullis was when her husband JAMES Mullis died in 1806 Robertson Co., Tenn. Geriah was executrix of his estate and auction, which was attended by several Barnes bidders.

I somewhere saw online a reference to Geriah's husband as John, as you do in your profile ( b. 1770) but again, the only instance of a Geriah (possibly nee Barnes) Mullis was 1806 James Mullis in 1806. If we are dealing with the same individual, a birth year of 1770 would be more probable inasmuch as a likely namesake son, James, was b. 1794 NC, and died in 1850 Brown Co., Ind.

If you could give me some idea of where you found information about the John you profile, perhaps together we could zero in on more information. I have researched the Mullis family in Virginia (1658) and North Carolina (1755-1790) for forty plus years and have an abundance of detailed information on the Mullis family for that timeframe, all based on documentary evidence, not hearsay.

Someone has posted a John Mullis who died 1818 Shelby Co., Va. and state he could have been the convict in Devonshire, who was sentenced to "Transportation to Virginia or other of His Majesties Plantations in America, in 1766. " That is a matter of record an is surely possible, though I have found no record of whether the convict was actually sent to Virginia or some other British colony of that period, e.g. Jamaica, Barbados.
