Biography

John Adams, Sr, was born on September 4, 1666 in Hartford, Connecticut and died about 1750 in Long Island City, Queens, New York. Dates for birth and death are estimated. He lived to be about 83 years old.

It is believed that John and Phebe were married in 1688 and his children with Phebe are: Abigail Adams 1706 – 1710 John Adams 1708 – 1762 Jonas Adams 1710 – 1757 Patience Adams 1712 William Adams 1714 – 1793 Sylvanus Adams 1719

Removed to Huntington, NY with mother Abigail and step father John Betts.He is first of record in Huntington, NY where on 5/6/1690 land which widow Betts had conveyed for the use of her children John Adams and John Betts had the title guaranteed by the former owner, Mark Meggs.

John was a resident of Cow Harbor, NY 1/10/1697 when Jeremiah and Elizabeth Smith deeded him land.

Other issue: Jonas born about 1700 who m Elizabeth Sexton. He and wife Phoebe conveyed land to John Conklin in 1699.Phoebe died before 1713.

One World Tree says he married Esther Cady at Canterbury, Windham, CT on 3/27/1710. A history of NJ from HeritageQuest online says he and his wife Esther removed to NJ and had 7 children.

He owned land at Chestnut Neck in Great Egg Harbor.

He died before 5/11/1750 as his son John, heir at law, his widow and his son John's wife, Sarah, sold the land at Chestnut Neck that had belonged to John Adams.

There are conflicting genealogies for John son of John son of Jeremy.

This article from Genealogies of Connecticut Families (which is a reprint of the NEHGR article as far as I can tell) has him as husband of Esther Cady, whereas we've currently got him attached to Phoebe. That John and Esther have the following children attached. Here's the full quote^[1]

"John Adams (John, Jeremy), born Sept. 1666, seems to have gone directly to New Jersey, or at any rate there is no record of his having been at Huntington. The following children are given by Hinman in his 'Puritan Settlers,' as the children of John Adams (son of John of Hartford) and his wife Esther. William S. Porter, in his paper "Hartford in 1640" No. I of Historical Notices of the Conn., speaks of a son Jonas, who was in Trenton, N. J. in 1753.
