Biography

Although the exact date of Lady Marjory Comyn's birth is unknown, she was the eldest daughter of Alexander Comyn, 6th Earl of Buchan and Elizabeth de Quincy.[1] She married Patrick de Dunbar, 8th Earl of Dunbar, son of Patrick de Dunbar, 7th Earl of Dunbar and Cecily Fitz John, some time before 1270.[2][1][3]

They had two known children.

Known Children

  • Patrick Dunbar, succeeded his father as 8th Earl of Dunbar[4]
  • George Dunbar[4]

Scottish Patriot

In April 1296 Marjorie held Dunbar Castle on behalf of the Scots against the besieging English until she was forced to surrender.[3][4]

Research Notes

The following attached children require further research and confirmation, as no sources have been found confirming the relationships. Crawford-15512 02:29, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

  • Sir Alexander Dunbar
  • John Dunbar
  • Margaret Dunbar
  • Hugh Dunbar
According to some sources the marriage with the Earl of Dunbar took place before 1271 (her parents married c1256). This would make Balfour-Paul's estimate (cited above) of her birth year incorrect. Using birth date 1257 Crawford-15512 05:03, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
There is no evidence as to where she was born.

Comyn-35 and Comyn-249 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. Had difficulty in adding her as John's mother, for some unknown reason.
