Biography

Sarah Jackson, daughter of Sebas Jackson and Sarah Baker, was born November 08, 1680 in Newton, Massachusetts, [1]

She married Jonathan Draper who was born at Roxbury, Massachusetts on March 10, 1670, son of James Draper [2] and his third wife Miriam Stansfield. [3]

Jonathan died February 28, 1746/7 [3] which was recorded at Newbury, Massachusetts. [1]

He died intestate and various notes and bonds where found within the household. On July 7, 1747, his widow Sarah Draper of Roxbury was appointed estate administrator. [4]

His widow Sarah indicated that his estate inventory was valued at L1333: 14, but added various incoming sums and expenses, interest, livestock etc. which included the sale of a negro woman named Flora for the sum of L104, however the judge noted this to be undervalue and added L46 for a total of L150 old tenor. An expense for the boarding and nursing of Hagar, a negro child for 104 weeks was also noted. [4]

In August, 1749, it was further found, that Captain Jonathan Draper also owned parcels of land in both Sutton and in Bellingham which had not been included in the original inventory. [4]

The court ordered a committee to divide the estate, providing one third to the widow and the remainder to the children with the eldest to receive a double portion, but to take into account what had already been settled on each child during their father's lifetime. [4]

On June 22, 1751, widow Sarah petitioned the Governor and Council for assistance, noting that while her husband had little debt, his properties were entangled having been used a surety for some of the children. She noted further her difficulties in administration at her age, and due to the children, all of legal age being unable or unwilling to come to some consensus relating to the estate distribution. She indicated that son Thomas had added items to the inventory and that he had filed a lawsuit against her administration, and now for her missing a deadline she felt she was being left insolvent as well as having to pay rent. The Council ordered the court to review all her accounts and expenses over the previous years in determining whether to allow her petition. After a complete review, her entitlement to various goods were allowed as well as her expenses as previously presented. In January, 1752/3 the court appointed a new committee to appraise the real estate of Jonathan Draper and distribute the properties in a final settlement. [4]

Sarah received rooms within the house as well as an allowance and maintenance during her natural life. The following heirs are also mentioned in the settlement, with the accounting taking into consideration that already received in parceling out shares:

  • eldest son Jonathan, remainder to equal double share
  • son David, having already received more than his share, no further legacy
  • sons Thomas and Moses, the equivalent of a single share. [4]
