Ezekiel Carter was born March 25, 1780, in Somerset, Pennsylvania, a son of Abraham Carter, by Rebecca Beck Edmonds, On November 27, 1800, in Greene Tennessee, Ezekiel married Martha Patsy Stanley, a daughter of Moses and Mary Stanley. [1]
Ezekiel's grandfather, John Carter, and his uncle, Levi Carter, moved their families from New Jersey to Tennessee, with long stopovers in Virginia and Surry county, North Carolina. John Carter found an Indian fortified village, made peace with the Indians and established a camp for settlers, in 1783. Many settlers are buried in the cemetery near the original site of the fort that they built, and named it Carter's Station. 70 year old "Ezekial" Carter is found on the United States Census of 1850, living in Green county, Tennessee with 69 year old Martha, 44 year old Judith Carter, and children, William Carter age 19 and Eliza Carter, age 19 (possible grandchildren). [2]
Ezekiel Carter died February 24, 1853, at the age of 72 years, in Greene county, Tennessee and is buried in the churchyard of New Carters Station United Methodist Church, in Mosheim Greene county, Tennessee. There is a photograph of his headstone on his Find A Grave memorial. [3]
