Biography

William (Douglas) Douglas IInd of Lochleven is a member of Clan Douglas.

William was the son of Henry Douglas and Marjory Stewart.[1]

He married Marjory Lindsay, daughter of David, first Earl of Crawford.[2][3][4] They had issue:

  1. Sir Henry[2]
  2. Sir James[2]
  3. Catherine[4]

About 1415 he had a dispenstion from Bishop Wardlaw of St Andrews to marry Elizabeth LIndsay. There is no evidence that this took place and he married her younger sister Christian Lindsay daughter of Alexander Lindsay earl of Crawford about 1418 [5] They had issue:

  1. Elizabeth married Sir Richard Lovell of Ballumbie in 1438.

Research Notes

Scots Peerage, which mentions the first wife in Vol. III, mentions only the second wife in Vol. VI (or more correctly, he mentions the second bride-to-be Elizabeth but the marriage was to her younger sister Christian) and assigns the sons Henry and James, who are mentioned above as offsrping by the second wife. SP also assigns two other children to this couple: Alexander and Elizabeth.[6]

There is dubiety about the last wife of Sir William. Seems unlikely that she was mother of his sons. She was Christian Lindsay daughter to Alexander earl of Crawford who then married David Wemyss of that Ilk and later James Auchinleck of that Ilk and survived them all. She seems to be mother to Elizabeth Douglas who married Lovell the laird of Ballumbie as Elizabeth Douglas was granddaughter of Alexander earl of Crawford.

William Douglas was granted a disposition by Bishop Wardlaw of St Andrews to marry Elizabeth Lindsay but no record of that marriage taking place so Christian Lindsay may have been a substitute. Who is Marjorie Lindsay given as wife to Sir William? Cannot find a contemporary source for that name

Douglas-527 and Douglas-3332 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same spouse, same time frame, same location, same death date, I am unsure of birth date or death place
