Information regarding Moses Stiles Sr., Spouse Phoebe Cram and Son Moses Stiles Jr. , Spouse Sarah (surname unknown) and children.

27. Moses' Stiles [18] (Samuel', Robert'), was born in Boxford, Mass., Feb. 10, 1704-5; ra. Phebe . [Our authority for giving Phebe as the name of Moses Stiles' wife, will be found in the account of Reuben Stiles of this family, see page 464.]

The following transcripts of deeds from the Land Records of Windham, Conn., were furnished by John D. Wheeler, Esq., Town Clerk of Willimantic (a district of Windham): "Moses Stiles of Windham, County of Windham and Colony of Connecticut in New England, Deeded to John Ayers of Stonington for thirty-live pounds all that my farm lying and being in the township of Windham, and is the second hundred acre lot, &c." Sold all the above excepting twenty acres of the West End which I formerly sold to John Frame.' Signed and sealed In presence of MOSES STILES, Solomon Huntington March 13, 1730. Richard Abbe John Fitch Massachusetts Family. 463 "Moses Stiles of Windham &c. Deeded to John Frame and Elizabeth his wife " [these persons were undoubtedly John and Elizabeth (Stiles) Frame, the latter a cousin of Moses Stiles, who were married at Boxford, Mass., in 1717, and lived at B. for a few years afterward] " about twenty acres of land lying in the Township of Windham the Westerly End of that one hundred acre Lot that I bought of Caleb Badcock, deceased, bounded as follows by lands of Stephen Brown, Nathaniel Wales and Lt. Ripley. MOSES STILES Signed Sealed In presence of ) Jan. 16, 1732 Solomon Huntington, John Fitch, EioHAED Abbe. Clerk

" John Ayer of Stonington in the County of New London in the Colony of [Connecticut] New England Quit Claimed to Moses Stiles all the land he purchased, about one hundred acres more or less— excepting the Twenty Acres sold to John Frame off the West End. " These bounds are the same as in the Deed from Moses Stiles to John Ayer. JOHN AYER Signed Sealed and delivered! Jan. 23, 1732 in presence of John Fitch, Isaac Paeke

[Clerk Benja Bidlake j Moses Stiles of Windham Quit Claimed to Benjamin Bidlake of the town County and Colony aforesaid, the second lot in the fifth of hundred lots in the last division &c. MOSES STILES Signed Sealed and delivered] January 25, 1732 in presence of I John Fitch Ebenezer Ginnings Clerk."

Jonathan Huntington J There is nothing that we can find to show when Moses Stiles came into possession of his land at Windham, but it is probable that he removed to Ashford, in the same county, after disposing of it, for the Land Eeeords of Ashford show that Moses Stiles had land deeded to him there, in 1735. We conclude that he was living in 1767, as the record of a land transaction at Lyndborough, N. H., in 1767, mentions his son Moses as " Moses Stiles the younger," which would seem to indicate that Moses the elder was then living No record of his family has been discovered, but from information gathered from various sources we have constructed a record in accordance with the probabilities of the case, both as to the persons themselves and the order in which they should be placed. [2]

Children (probably all born in Conn.): I. Moses Jr., m. Sarah. II. Jolin^j b. about 1736; m. Susannah Chamberlain. III. Samuel* ; in 1778 Samuel Stiles was collector of taxes at Bennington, N. H. IV. Asahel* ; m. Sarah Button. Family 11. V. Reuben*. " Reuben Stiles, son of Moses Stiles andPheoby, his wife, born June 13, 1749 ; died Sept. 7, 1773" {Lyndeborough, N. H., Town Records).

Farmers and Moore's Historical Colls, (vol. 1, p. 67) contains the following: " Reuben Stiles was one of those killed Sept. 7, 1773, by the breaking of a beam, and falling of the frame of the second meeting-house in "Wilton, Sr. H. The killed and wounded numbered 53 ; 2 died the next day." Before the publication of the first edition of "The Massachusetts Family of Stiles," the author of it (Dr. H. R. Stiles) received from Esq David Stiles, of Temple, N. H., the following statement: "I had knowledge [Esq. S. was born in 1779, and doubtless knew what he was telling] of 3 brothers who came from some part of Connecticut to Lyndeborough N. H., namely: Moses, John and Samuel Stiles. Moses had Moses Jr., Aaron and Sarah."

Fortunately Lyndeborough records give the births of the children of Moses Stiles .Jr. and Sarah his wife, and among them areSarah, Moses and Aaron. Thus we are enabled to identify the Moses who came with his brothers John and Samuel from Conn, as the Moses Jr. of the Lyndeborough Records. There can be no reasonable question in the matter.-M. S. P. G.

Esq. S. had lived at some time in his life at Lyndeborough we believe. Massachusetts Famih/. 465 A. B. Stiles of East Eandolph, Yt., furnished (in 1S57) the following additional particulars : " A Stiles was the first man killed. He jumped and struck the ground upon his feet, and was walking away unhurt, when a falling stick of timber struck him on the head and killed him instantly. There were several more killed and wounded, and crying for water, when my grandfather (John Stiles), running to a spring about 20 rods distant where there was a barrel filled with water, caught it up, carried it to the spot, and, having set it down, smote the head in with his fist. I mention this merely to show that the old Stileses were stout; but every generation grows weaker and wiser." [The above story was repeated by Mr. Stiles in 1887.]

It may seem too bad to spoil a good story, but we have it from another grandson of John Stiles, that John Stiles was home in Lyndeborough at the time of the accident. " He had a presentiment," says Mr. Stiles, " that something had happened to his brother. He got up and opened the door about the time the horse (of the messenger who brought the news) stopped, and said : ' Is my brother dead ?

VI. Aaron*. This name is given on the authority of Mr. Horace A. Stiles of Augusta, Wis., who includes Aaron in the list of brothers of John Stiles, his grandfather. We have found no account of him.

Remarks. — After long and patient investigation, we submit the foregoing arrangement of the family record of Moses' Stiles, feeling confident that it is correct in its most important features. As we have already said, we are not sure as to the order of births, but that is immaterial . We found our greatest difficulty in endeavoring to harmonize conflicting statements ; or, rather, to bring family tradition into agreement with public records and other authenticated facts. In a number of instances this proved impossible . For example: We are told by one gentleman that his grandfather, John Stiles, an early settler at Lyndeborough, N. H., who had 466 Stiles Genealogy. brothers named Moses, Samuel, Asahel, Aaron and Reuben (the latter killed at the Wilton disaster Sept. 7, 1773), was the son of Aaron and Sarah {Cram) Stiles. He says he has known this for a fact es-er since he was a child, when he was a great deal with his grandfather. He is very positive in his assertions, and says he cannot be mistaken, although his grandfather died when he himself was about 9 years old. In vain we quote to him from public records that " Moses Stiles Jr. " was of Lyndeborough in 1763 ; that " Moses Stiles the younger " was of the same place in 1767 ; that " Moses Stiles Jr. " and Sarah, his wife, had Sarah, Moses and Aaron (and other younger children), as Esquire David Stiles stated that the Moses he knew of had ; and finally, that Eeuben, whose death occurred Sept. 7, 1773, was the son of Moses and Pheoby, his wife, if the record can be trusted. He refuses to yield the point, although his own statements relative to his grandfather's brother Moses prove very conclusively that he was really the Moses Jr. of the records. Mr. has evidently got facts and traditions confused in his recollections of his youthful days. We think we could explain how it happens that he has fixed upon Aaron as the name of his great-grandfather Stiles, bat this is hardly the place to do so. We must, therefore, leave the matter, hoping that he and those who, seeing with his eyes, share his belief, may yet accept our conclusions. —M. S. P. Guild.

Moses Stiles who was married to Sarah died in 1811. He did not marry Mary Holt. He was of Greenfield, New Hampshire at the time of his death. In his will written 28 March 1811 (proved 18 June 1811), Moses Stiles of Greenfield bequeathed one dollar to his son Aaron Stiles. Daughter Sarah Holt received the plain chest and table, one pewter platter, and three pewter plates. His other two sons Moses Stiles and Samuel Stiles have received their shares and signed acquittances. Niece Rachel Taylor receives the rest of the estate real and personal provided she lives with and cares for Moses for Moses’s natural life. Joseph Ellingwood of Greenfield was named executor.

It was Moses the son of Moses and Sarah who married Mary Holt. The son Moses was born 6 June 1765.
