Biography

Joan Allen was born about 1629 in England. It is not certain when the family arrived in Virginia, however father Arthur Allen recorded a patent for 200 acres in James City County, 14 May 1649.

Marriages & Children

Joan married Robert Williamson Sr about 1652/54 probably in Surry County, Virginia, where she was living with her parents. Or the marriage may have taken place in Isle of Wight County where her new husband made his home. No record has been found for their marriage. However, in his will dated 16 February 1669/70, Robert Williamson states his oldest son Robert is not yet age 18, indicating a birth after 1652. [2] Known children (named in will):

  1. Robert Williamson
  2. George Williamson
  3. Arthur Williamson
  4. Francis Williamson

Joan married second Robert Burnett about 1671/72. On 2 November 1672 Burnett "as marrying the relict of Robert Williamson" gave bond for the settlement of Robert Williamson's estate.[2] They had one child, daughter Ann Burnett, born about 1672/73. She died unmarried in 1729. Her will was dated 8 April 1729 and probated on 28 April 1729. It mentioned brother Francis Williamson and cousin Joseph Williamson.[3]

Joan married third Reuben Proctor of Isle of Wight County. The marriage date is unknown. In 1710 Joan's brother Major Arthur Allen named sister "Jane Proctor" in his will.[4]

Related Land Transactions

  • 1683 - Deed of Joseph Bridger, Esq., for certain land (left by Dr. Robert Williamson to Joan, his wife, for life, and then to his eldest son Robert, which lands were found to escheat and were then granted in 1678 to said Bridger) to said Joan, now the wife of Mr. Robert Burnett. 8 Aug. 1683.[5]

Joan and Robert are my eighth great-grandparents. I notice this is in a category of Puritans, In America. Does that mean they are Puritans?

I am requesting that we retain the tree as Stella Pickett Hardy invented it. We should either do complete new research abandoning all of her work or document it as created so when researchers go looking for these persons who exist in tens of thousands of places, they get a match and usable information. We are currently creating a Mashup of corrected fiction.
