Mary Willard was born on 3 August 1680 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her parents were Henry and Mary (Lakin) Willard.[1]
Mary's family moved to Lancaster, Middlesex (later Worcester), Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1685, where the births of several of her younger siblings are recorded. Mary's mother died in Lancaster sometime before 1689, when her father married, second, Dorcas (Unknown). He had seven children by her, from 1690 through 1702, the last posthumous.
Mary married Isaac Hunt on 26 April 1698, in Weymouth, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2][3] Mary and Isaac were both of Braintree, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony at the time of their marriage. Mary may have left her family by 1698 due to her father's second marriage and five (and counting) additional children in the house. Isaac's family was of Concord, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, so he was also away from home in 1698.
Mary and Isaac had their first child in Braintree (the birth of son Isaac appears in the Braintree vital records index but not on the indicated page).[4] They soon were living in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, in the section that became Cambridge Farms and later Lexington. Their next six children were born there. Thomas through John appear in Lexington records with baptism dates, and Thomas, Samuel, and John appear in Cambridge records with birth dates. Mary and Isaac then removed to Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, where the last three of their children were born:[5][6][7]
Isaac died on 6 December 1717, in Sudbury.[8] He left a large estate, but he also left Mary with several very young children.
Mary married, second, Ebenezer Lealand Sr., as his third wife, on 29 August 1721, in Sherborn, Middlesex, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mary was of Sudbury at that time.[9] Sherborn birth records show no children from this couple.
Unhelpful for genealogical clarity, Mary's daughter Mary married Isaac Lealand, son of Ebenezer Sr., on 21 November 1721, in Sherborn.[9]
On 26 March 1722 Mary's minor age children were assigned to Isaac's younger brother Ebenezer Hunt as their legal guardian: Thomas in his 21st year, Ebenezer in his 15th, Samuel in his 13th, John in his 11th, Simon in his 8th, Henry in his 6th, and Abidah in his 5th. Later, Ebenezer Lealand Sr. was appointed as the guardian of Samuel on 3 June 1724; John chose Capt. Benjamin Willard as his guardian on 17 November 1727; Simon chose John Fletcher, his uncle by marriage, on 8 July 1728; son Henry chose John Rice on 12 April 1731, then Henry's brother Isaac on 23 February 1732/3.[10][11]
Mary's husband Ebenezer died in Sherborn in 30 June 1742, intestate.[12] His inventory was taken on 14 September 1742 by his widow Mary Lealand and the children of Ebenezer by his first wife Patience (Rice).[13]
No further records have been found for Mary (Willard) (Hunt) Lealand. At age 62 when Ebenezer died, she probably went to live with one of her children by her first marriage.
Dates with no sources for her death are 1765 in Hardwick (FamilySearch) and 1769 in Lancaster (Millennium File).
