Hannah Hough was born 31 July 1646 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts as the first child of William Hough, Deacon and Sarah Calkins[1]. She had nine siblings, namely: Abiah, Sarah, Samuel, John, William, Jonathan, Deborah, Abigail, and Anne.

Finding the climate too bleak for farming they moved in the Fall of 1650 to Pequot in the Colony of Connecticut, now known as New London, New London County, Connecticut.

Spouse's Name John Bourden or Borden.

When she was 15, Hannah Hough married John Bourden on 11 February 1662 in New London, New London County, Connecticut[2][3].

There is much confusion about when and where John Bourden/Borden was born. See the following:

John Borden was born 24 June 1635 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and, at the age of 4, was baptized in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, 8 August 1639. Dedham is located about 5 miles south of Watertown.

John Balducke the sone of our sister Gay by hir first husband was baptised the 8th day of the 6 month 1639,? and ?Samuel Gay son of our sister Gay by hir 2nd husband was baptised the same day?.

John was born at sea if 1635 is correct, but in Watertown if the year should be 1636.

Birth: 24 Apr 1636 in Dedham, Massachusetts per "New England Historical and Genealogical Register" (NEHGR), vol. 130, Jan 1976, pg. 35 "A Note On The Gay-Borden Families In Early New England," by Robert C. Anderson. The Dedham Town register of births gives 1635 as the birth year. If that were true, John would have been born on the Atlantic voyage, which is possible; or maybe the register contained a mistake. Individual entries were not date with the year; there were two sets of 1635 entries, and none for 1636.

From the second entry of the Dedham Town register of births: ? 1635 John, the Son of John Balden and Joana his wife, was borne the 24th of the 4th mo.? SO John was the son of John Borden, born about 1607 and christened 22 February 1606/7 in Headcorn, Kent, England and Joanna Hooker, born about 1612 in Kent, England and christened 12 April 1612 in Lenham, Kent, England.

John's parents must have died and John grew up in the family of John Gay of Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.

In 1652 John BOURDEN took the Oath of Fidelity in Watertown, Massachusetts.

John was apprenticed to Charles Chadwick of Watertown during the mid-1650s

The town of Watertown, Massachusetts owed John Borden 9 shillings per Debt List 1653. Further records showed the date paid in 1654 per NEHGR, vol. 130, Jan 1976, pg. 37, "A Note On The Gay-Borden Families In Early New England," by Robert C. Anderson.

A suit in Watertown, Massachusetts was filed by Charles Chadwick against "John Borden, my late apprentice" and was dropped, Court 20 February 1637/8 per NEHGR, vol. 130, Jan 1976, pg. 37 "A Note On The Gay-Borden Families In Early New England," by Robert C. Anderson.

By 1661 John Borden had moved to New London, New London County, Connecticut where he was admitted to the town privileges in 1661/2.

John Borden and Hannah Hough had at least 7 children:

  1. John Borden Jr. (b. abt. 1664, bp. 9 Apr 1671 New London, Connecticut[4] – 1708) married Marah ____ who some believe is Mary Tillotson (?) 13 Mar 1689 in Lyme, Connecticut[5].. The birth records of their children all list her name as Mariah.
  2. Samuel Borden (bp. 9 APR 1671 at First Church of Christ, Groton, New London, Connecticut Colony[4] - ).
  3. Hannah Borden (bp. 9 Apr 1671 in New London, Connecticut[4]
  4. William Bordon (bp. 20 Sep 1674 in New London, Connecticut[4] – 1747) Twin with Sarah
  5. Sarah Borden (bp. 20 Sep 1674 in New London, Connecticut[4] – ? ) twin with William
  6. Joanna Borden (bp. 5 Aug 1677 New London, Connecticut[4] - 1740) married Nathaniel Bassett
  7. Jane/Jeane BORDEN (11 Jan 1680 Lyme TWP, New London, Connecticut[6] – 1755) married William Parke,

In 1669 the Nuncupative will of Hezekiah Gay, son of John Gay of Dedham, Massachusetts , making bequests to his brothers and sisters. Gives some clothing to "my brother John BORD. I think he have most need, they are hardest to be gotten there. " (1) This will indicates that a John BORD, or BORDEN, grew up in the family of John GAY and was regarded as a brother by John Gays children, that this John BORD(EN) was still living in 1669, but at a distance from Dedham.

The family moved a few miles west to Lyme, New London, Connecticut and, although the family continued to attend church in New London, where his children were baptised 1671-1681, surname spelled BALDIN.

Hannah died about 1682 in Lyme, New London, Connecticut where she was buried.

John died about 1684 in Lyme, New London, Connecticut where he was buried.

John died by 10 Apr 1684[7].

! Birth: (1a) s/o John BALDEN/Joana, 24th of the 4th mo. 1635. John BALDUCKE, s/o our sister GAY by her first husband. (1) In English records, BALDEN was an occasional alternate spelling for BORDEN. Nowhere does the name BALDUCKE appear. Rev. John ALLIN, who made the record, was notoriously unable to spell. The year 1635 is given for the record, but it appears after an entry for Jul 1635, and before two births in 1637 and several in 1638, and was probably recorded in 1636. It is also a possibility that he was born during the mid-May, June, and July 1635 crossing of the Atlantic in the "Elizabeth and Anne", and the birth was recorded sometime later in the Dedham, MA records. Baptism: (1a) John BALDUCKE, son of our sister GAY by her first husband, 8th day, 6th mo., 1639, Dedham, MA, by Rev. John ALLIN. Death: (1j) Administration of estate dtd 20 Jun 1684, New London Co., CT. Of Lyme.
