James was a soldier from 1777-1783 under the direction of Generals Greene and Washington. James, and his brother, John, were both in the battle of Long Island. John was killed and buried there.[7]
Following the war, James made a homestead on the Sussex County/Kingsbridge County lines. It was at this point that James changed his family name to Glann from Glenn. The rest of the family in the area remained Glenns. The change was inspired, according the James' son Nathaniel, by an old Scotch schoolmaster, to be more in line with the Gaelic tongue of the Glenn's homeland.[7]
James died 28 Jul 1825 at Minisink, Orange, New York, United States.[3][4][5] He is buried on Coe Farm, Wantage, Sussex, New Jersey.[8][4]
The Fox Farm, home of this family of Glanns, is now home to the Chatawyle Restaurant.[9]
