Jefferson County, Tennessee did not record births before 1908.

James was ten years old when his mother died in 1856. His father married Mary Canaday in 1858.

Marriage record revealed James M. Coley and Emiline Nicholson married on August 15, 1867 in Roane County, Tennessee.

James was twenty-one and Emaline was twenty-two when they married.

The 1870 census of August 2, revealed James was a miller and their personal property value was $200. Their post office was Post Oak Springs and they lived in District 13, Roane County, Tennessee. James and Emaline were born in Tennessee. Household members: Jas L. Cooley (34), Emaline (24) and Sarah A. (2).

The 1880 census of June 4, revealed James was a farm laborer and they lived in District 6, Roane County, Tennessee. Their parents were born in Tennessee. Household members: James Coley (38), Emilin (33), Mellie (12), Laurie (10), Joseph (8), Ida (5), Martha (2) and Dora L. (3/12).

The 1900 census of June 26, revealed James was a farmer and they rented their farm in District 13, Roane County, Tennessee. James was born in May 1846 and Emaline was born in April 1846. James's parents were born in North Carolina. They had been married thirty-three years, had nine children and eight still living. Household members: James M. Coley (54), Emaline (54), John (18), Thomas (15), Dixie L. (11) and grandson, Ray E. Winkler (6).

The 1910 census of April 26, revealed James was a farmer on his own account and they owned their farm free of mortgage in District 4, Cumberland County, Tennessee. They had been married forty-five years, had nine children and seven still living. Household members: James M. Coley (64), Emaline (64) and grandson, Ray B. (16). Their son, Joseph lived four doors away.

Death certificate revealed James M. Coley was born on May 27, 1846 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. His parents were Joshua and Mary Coley both born in Jefferson County, Tennessee. James was married and a farmer. He died at age 67y. 8m. 9d. due to four years of Chronic Diarrhea on February 5 1914 in Pruden, Clear Fork, Bell County, Kentucky. Informant was J. J. Coley. Burial was in Fonde Cemetery on February 6, 1914.

James lived to age 67.

Dad said that when he was little, he went to Knoxville with his dad (Thomas Cleveland). As they were walking on the street, someone called their name, they turned around and it was James Monroe. He told them that he had to be careful that "The Yankees" were looking for him.
