Biography

Jedidah Smith was born in 1689, the daughter of Benjamin Smith and Jedidah Mayhew.^[1]

On January 1, 1710, Jedidah married Reverend Samuel Osborne, who emigrated from Ireland.^[2][1][3][4].

Samuel Osborn was born about 1711 at Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts.^[5] He was the son of Samuel Osborne and Mercy Norton. Samuel's parents never married.

"The library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) has the manuscript of volume III of Dr. Charles E. Banks' history of Martha's Vineyard. The manuscript (Mss A B32) is titled "Settlers of Martha's Vineyard" and contains much information not included in the published history. A note in Osborn section of the manuscript reads "Dukes Co. Court Rec., 1711. Samuel Osborn convicted of being the father of an illegitimate child born of the body of Mercy Norton. Ordered to pay the mother 1/6 per week until the child be three years of age and thereafter for four years 1/- per week."^[6]

Rev. Samuel Osborn also had a legitimate son named Samuel, whom he mentions in one of his letters as the recipient of land in Dartmouth from him and who died in Boston, (estate settled there in 1753), leaving an interest in said lands.^[6]

2. Elizabeth Osborn, baptized in 1715; married first 23 Jan 1733/1734 Eastham, Barnstable Co., MA, Capt. William Myrick, who died at Louisburg; second 15 Jan 1744/1745 Eastham, Barnstable Co., MA, William Payne; and third Edmund Doane 10 Nov 1749. They were among the first settlers of Barrington, Nova Scotia in 1761^[4][3]
3. Abigail Osborne who married John Homer, son of Benjamin Homer in 1749. They were among the first settlers of Barrington, Nova Scotia in 1761^[4][3]

Jedidah (Smith) Osborne died in 1743, at which time her husband remarried. Some family trees indicate she died in Nova Scotia in 1743; however the first settlements began in 1759-61, including Barrington, where some members of her family were among the first settlers. This profile shows her death occurred in Boston, Massachusetts, where her husband remarried.
