Research Notes

Both Cambridge and Lexington Vital Birth records list Shuball Stearns, son of Charles and Rebecca Stearns, born 20 Sep 1655. These could both be correct, if they maintained dwellings in both places.- entered by Howe-3137 14:42, 10 December 2017 (EST)

Torrey lists two marriages for Shuball Stearns (spellings vary), one to an unknown wife by 1683 and second to Mary Upton, intentions published in Lynn 27 Apr 1705. The Mary Upton intentions also appear in Lynn Vital Marriage Records, p 350. If these; are correct. all the listed children are by the first wife, not Mary Upton. - entered by Howe-3137 14:55, 10 December 2017 (EST)

There are three daughters named Mary Stearns currently listed. Two of them have been proposed for merge, having the same birth date, but widely varying death dates. I suspect there were two Mary's, one who died young and a second, born after the first with the later death date. I have been unable to confirm this with vital records or any other sources so far. - entered by 15:06, 10 December 2017 (EST)

If Shubael did not marry Mary Upton until 1705, then none of the children are hers. The all need to be switched to the correct mother, his unknown first wife.

According to the Avis Stearns Van Wagenen book: Shubael's will dated Nov. 19, 1733 proved September 2, 1734 there where only 9 children. This wikitree shows 2 Mary Stearns (717 and 2096) that need to be merged. Mary Stearns did marry a Nathaniel Flint and they had 2 daughters; oldest named Elizabeth, but the 2nd daughter is named Mary too. It is noted in the book that 'no record of Shubael and Mary Upton's marriage had been found'. As all 3 of these wives of Shubael's were Upton's it seems the discrepancies arise from the date of the marriage and it is also noted that none of the ladies have an exact date of birth. Which brings up the question if these ladies should all be merged as well into a single Mary Upton. My lineage of Shubael comes from his 2nd son Samuel.
