John Murray Murdoch was born on the 28th December 1820 at Gas(s)water in Auchinleck, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the son of James Murdoch and Mary Murray.
It is likely that John was residing in Auchinleck at the time of the 1841 Census
John married Anne Steele on the 25th February 1848 in the home parish of his wife, Kirkconnell in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. [1]
Their first two children, Elizabeth (born about 1849) and james (born about 1850) were both born in Kirkconnell, Dumfriesshire.
In 1851, John and Ann were living in Commondyke Coalwork Row 2Nd, 16, in the parish of Auchinleck, Ayrshire, Scotland. John was a 30 year old Coal miner. Living with John and Ann were their two young children, Elisabeth (2 years old) and James (9 months old)[2]
Sometime in 1852, John and Ann had left Scotland and sailed to North America where they then journeyed across the land to Utah, the new home of the Mormon Church ("Zion").
John sent money back to his mother Mary (Murray) Murdoch in Auchinleck, so that she could bring herself and some of her children to Utah. His mother Mary and many of his siblings left Scotland for Utah around 1856. She was accompanied by Anne's brother James Steele and his young family.
No scotland census record has been found for John. The 1841 census for Auchinleck (John's home parish) was lost in transit from London to Edinburgh, so it is possible that John was living in Auchinleck at the time of the 1841 census.

John Murdoch, of New Cumnock in Ayrshire, composed these lines of farewell to his homeland:
Oh Scotland my country, my dear native home,
Thou land of the brave and the theme of my song,
Oh why should I leave thee and cross the deep sea,
To a strange land far distant lovely Scotland from thee …
But why should I linger or wish for to stay.
The voice of the Prophet is “haste, flee away. …” 26 Ref: : Frederick Stewart Buchanan, The Emigration of Scottish Mormons to Utah, 1849–1900, master’s thesis, University of Utah, 1961 C. Lovelace G-5

I changed the marriage date between John Murray Murdock and Ann Steele according to the records in Scotland Marriages, 1561-1910. Changed from 24 Feb to 25 Feb 1848.
Murdock-831 and Murdoch-100 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these are the same person. I spelled Murdoch with a k at first, which caused the duplication.
